Build "Squeek Maze" — a Pac-Man style arcade game for Squeekchain, the hamster-powered blockchain.

GAME CONCEPT: The hamster Squeektoshi is trapped in a maze and chased by snakes. Eat all the peanuts in the maze to advance to the next level. Power beans let you temporarily eat the snakes for bonus points.

CORE GAMEPLAY:

  • Grid-based maze (canvas rendered, ~21x21 cells)
  • Player controls the hamster with arrow keys / WASD / touch swipe (mobile)
  • 1 to 4 snakes chase the hamster using BFS pathfinding AI
  • Eat all peanuts in the maze to complete the level
  • Power beans (special glowing peanuts) give 5 seconds to eat snakes for bonus points
  • If a snake catches the hamster, lose a life (3 lives total)
  • Game over when all lives are lost
  • Score: peanuts=10pts, power beans=50pts, eaten snake=200pts, level complete bonus=level*100

50 LEVELS WITH INCREASING DIFFICULTY:

  • Level 1-10: 1 snake, slow speed, simple mazes
  • Level 11-20: 2 snakes, medium speed, more complex mazes
  • Level 21-30: 3 snakes, faster, tighter mazes
  • Level 31-40: 4 snakes, fast, complex mazes, shorter power bean duration
  • Level 41-50: 4 snakes, very fast, minimal power beans, hardest mazes
  • Each level has a unique procedurally generated maze (seeded for consistency)
  • Show level number, score, lives, and a progress bar

LEADERBOARD:

  • Stored in localStorage
  • Top 10 scores with player name (entered on game over)
  • Show on a dedicated leaderboard screen accessible from main menu

VISUAL DESIGN:

  • Squeekchain hamster theme: warm orange/gold color palette matching squeekchain.com
  • Hamster sprite: cute round hamster (CSS/canvas drawn, no external images needed)
  • Snakes: green serpentine shapes
  • Peanuts: small golden dots
  • Power beans: larger glowing pulsing dots
  • Maze walls: dark with subtle texture
  • Animated background: subtle hamster wheel pattern
  • Squeektoshi status indicator at top: reads api.squeekchain.com/v1/status and shows if hamster is RUNNING or SLEEPING with an icon
  • When Squeektoshi is running in real life, the player's hamster gets a subtle speed boost (10% faster movement)
  • Title screen with game name, animated hamster, "Play" and "Leaderboard" buttons
  • Level transition screen showing "Level X" with brief countdown
  • Game over screen with final score, name entry for leaderboard, "Play Again" button
  • Win screen after level 50 with congratulations and final score

TECHNICAL:

  • Single-page web app: HTML5 Canvas + vanilla JavaScript
  • Procedural maze generation using recursive backtracking algorithm, seeded by level number
  • BFS pathfinding for snake AI
  • requestAnimationFrame game loop with delta time for smooth movement
  • Touch controls for mobile (swipe to change direction)
  • Responsive: scales canvas to fit screen, works on desktop and mobile
  • All graphics drawn with canvas (no external image files)
  • Polls api.squeekchain.com/v1/status every 10 seconds for live hamster state
  • Links to squeekchain.com in the footer
  • Clean, polished, finished product — this is a real playable game, not a demo

    • bug: nonqualifying scores falsely report success. With ten higher scores stored, saving a zero-point run says “Score saved. Find it on the leaderboard,” but discards it. Distinguish nonqualifying runs and display truthful feedback.
    • bug: status failure moves the mobile game. At 320×700, a failed poll expands the status panel from 59px to 80px, moving the maze and controls down 21px. “Unavailable · standard speed” fits without that shift.

All 18 existing tests passed. Chromium and WebKit passed the primary playthrough. Later-level completion and victory screens were checked using controlled fixtures. Application files remain unchanged.

The visual idea is a warm hamster arcade centered on a dark maze cabinet.

    • mediumbug: saving a nonqualifying run falsely promises a leaderboard entrysrc/main.js:368

Now: After ten higher scores exist, saving a lower run disables the name and Save controls and says “Score saved. Find it on the leaderboard.” The storage helper has already discarded that run with slice(0, 10).

Change to: Return whether the submitted run was retained from saveScore and show “This run did not reach your top 10. Try again!” for a nonqualifying score; reserve the existing success message for a retained entry.

Why: The required local top-10 leaderboard should give truthful save feedback; the current success state directs the player to an entry that does not exist.

      Chromium, 390×844.

In a fresh page, set localStorage["squeek-maze.scores.v1"] to JSON.stringify(Array.from({length:10},(_,i)=>({name:"Previous"+i,score:1000+i*100,level:1,date:"2026-11-06T00:00:00Z"}))), then reload.

Click Play Squeek Maze, wait for the countdown, press P, click Finish run (score 0), enter Eleventh, and click Save.

      Actual: #save-message reads “Score saved.

Find it on the leaderboard.”, #save-button reads Saved, and the name input is disabled.

Open Leaderboard: there are 10 rows, zero Eleventh matches, and the stored array contains only the ten previous entries.

Expected: explicitly say the run did not qualify instead of claiming it is saved on the leaderboard.

    • mediumbug: live-status failure shifts the maze and controls by 21px at 320pxsrc/main.js:509

Now: At 320px the unavailable detail wraps to an extra line, expanding the status panel from 59px to 80px and moving the entire cabinet and its controls down 21px on a poll failure.

Change to: Replace the unavailable detail with “Unavailable · standard speed”; this fits the existing 320px status row and keeps its measured height at 59px.

Why: Loading, failure, and retry states must communicate the known state without moving unrelated content; a live arcade board and controls should remain stable while the status polls.

Chromium, 320×700, fresh load at scrollY=0.

Intercept https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status: fulfill the first request with {"measurement":{"freshness":"online","rpmMilli":1000,"observedAt":,"staleAfterSeconds":120}}, then abort the next request at 10 seconds.

      Before failure: #live-status height 59px, #maze top 318.59375px, #pause-button top 651.59375px.

After failure: height 80px, #maze top 339.59375px, #pause-button top 672.59375px (its bottom moves from 691.59375px to 712.59375px, beyond the 700px viewport).

Screenshots confirm the extra status line and displaced cabinet.

Replacing only #status-detail text with “Unavailable · standard speed” returns the panel to 59px.

Expected: status changes while the maze and controls retain their positions.
