STRATOKS — WORLD ART AND INTERFACE OVERHAUL

Modify https://github.com/kilicsln/stratoks from commit fc1df0f9e641d05b7e32e1c96cb1b963e61576aa.

Live reference: https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io

Deliver a working frontend with original reusable artwork, not a concept image or a CSS-only reskin.

PRESERVE THE EXPERIMENT

Keep the authoritative server, simulation rules, world ID, residents, learned weights, memories, saves and API contracts unchanged. No resets, migrations, new token, contracts or payment integration. Preserve live polling, world selection, resident inspection, follow, search, minimap and reconnect. Keep isolated demo clearly separate. Production disables the old settlement client; respect legacyAvailable:false. Do not deploy to the owner's VPS; deliver the tested source and static build for installation.

ART DIRECTION

An inviting, richly illustrated miniature living world: storybook textures, soft depth, warm sunlight, lush emerald vegetation, turquoise water, honey-colored wood and stone. Distinct sandy deserts, snowy highlands and rocky island coasts. Original expressive golden creatures with a distinctive silhouette and consistent proportions. A cozy settlement with readable paths, foliage and resource-linked buildings. Avoid emoji residents, flat colored rectangles, generic dashboard cards, neon sci-fi styling and a single background painting.

Use a 2.5D/isometric visual presentation over existing world coordinates. Preserve accurate picking, camera bounds, viewport requests and minimap transforms. Cache and cull offscreen artwork. Do not alter pathfinding or terrain to suit an illustration. Decorative details must not imply nonexistent usable resources, buildings or behaviors.

ASSETS AND MOTION

Create and ship actual transparent sprite atlases, terrain transitions, resource variants, shelters and state effects, with an asset manifest, dimensions, anchors, attribution/licenses and editable source where available. Use a cohesive original art style throughout; no remote hotlinked placeholders.

Provide directional walking and idle loops plus resting, gathering, carrying, building and distress appearances only when supported by the existing state. Retain individual identity across sessions. Interpolate confirmed positions without inventing actions. Add restrained water, foliage and fire animation; fire appears only where the engine reports it. Respect reduced-motion preferences.

INTERFACE

Make the live world the main screen, filling most of the viewport rather than sitting below a marketing hero. Compact STRATOKS logo and status bar; use actual population, connection and world time. Show other totals only when available with a defined scope.

Use charcoal, dark moss and wood-toned HUD surfaces with warm gold accents and clear, readable type. Keep the world bright and colorful. Small left tool rail, bottom-right minimap, collapsible right resident inspector. On phones use touch navigation and a bottom inspector sheet without covering the selected creature.

Organize detailed science under expandable Plans, Perception and Learning panels. Preserve actual evidence and uncertainty. No invented thoughts, speeches, discoveries, friendship or leadership. No nonfunctional IMD/shop/disaster buttons. Hide unsupported actions.

DELIVERY AND ACCEPTANCE

Work in a separate branch and deliver a commit or patch against the pinned source, complete assets, reproducible build instructions and static output. Do not replace other applications or run a second shared world.

Provide actual rendered desktop/tablet/mobile screenshots and a short recording showing live movement, resident selection, follow, pan, zoom, minimap and reconnect. Test at 390, 851 and 1440 pixels. No clipped controls, overflow, unreadable labels, broken assets or JavaScript errors.

Run relevant tests, typecheck and build. Verify coordinate picking across zoom levels and chunk boundaries. Measure browser performance with a clearly labeled recorded or synthetic population fixture; distinguish that from live testing. Do not claim 60 fps without measurements.

Completion requires the original art to be integrated into the functioning world. A mockup, unchanged geometric map, or decorative screenshot over a broken client is not an acceptable delivery. List remaining limitations honestly.

Publish the rebuilt static frontend on IMD hosting as a review preview. Never modify the live VPS. Preserve source files outside the frontend. Use the art step outputs in the actual renderer.

  4. Site content checkAgent #1254found 1 medium

The review found nothing in the build that should stop it being hosted. I recorded one medium attribution finding in .imd-findings.json and changed no other files.

What I read in dist/: index.html, both config JSON files, the art manifest, all seven scripts in dist/assets/, the license files, the art atlases and the share image. I searched the scripts for URLs, eval/new Function, iframes, redirects, importScripts, wallet and signing calls, seed-phrase or private-key prompts, and giveaway or token wording. I then read the code around each match.

    No critical or high findings:

    • Wallet code: it is only in the old settlement client (Legacy-DjIznllY.js). That client loads only if expanse-config.json reports legacyAvailable === true, and the hosted config sets it to false. Even when it does load, it asks for one plain sign-in message and says "No transaction, fee, or private key." There are no approvals, permits or transfers.
    • Wallet logos: the MetaMask, Coinbase, Phantom and Rabby SVGs label "Open in …" links. That points to the real wallets; it doesn't pose as any of them.
    • Remote code: none is downloaded and run. The only external host the main script contacts is the owner's own server (stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io) for read-only GET requests that send no credentials. The demo and learning workers make no network calls.
    • Content: there are no hidden iframes, redirects, obfuscated scripts or financial claims. The atlases and share image show an original golden-rabbit world with nothing objectionable.
    • Hosted copies: the art, manifest, license and config files in dist/ are byte-identical to those in web/public/. The atlas checksums match the manifest.

The finding (medium, advisory): the repository gives two conflicting accounts of where the art came from.

    • docs/ASSETS.md:3 still says the art is drawn in code and that "No … AI-generated image … is used."
    • The hosted dist/art/manifest.json:5 and docs/art/DIRECTION.md credit the atlases the renderer now uses to OpenAI image generation.
    • The hosted dist/licenses/client-and-art.txt doesn't mention the generated atlases either.

The fix is to correct docs/ASSETS.md and the license note.

    • mediumAsset attribution says no AI-generated image is used, but the shipped atlases are credited to OpenAI image generationdocs/ASSETS.md:3

docs/ASSETS.md says all terrain, foliage, shelters and yellow Stratoks are code-native artwork in web/src/renderer.ts, and that no AI-generated image is used. That text predates this overhaul. The site to be hosted now draws its world from raster sprite atlases: dist/art/characters.png, world.png and extra.png, loaded by web/src/expanse/art.tsx:16. dist/art/manifest.json:5 and docs/art/DIRECTION.md:3/25 credit these atlases to 'OpenAI image generation, 2026'.

The repository gives two contradictory provenance statements for the same art. The hosted dist/licenses/client-and-art.txt also does not mention the generated atlases. This is advisory and does not block hosting: the manifest that is actually hosted carries the correct attribution.

Read docs/ASSETS.md line 3: it says 'No stock scene, AI-generated image ... is used'.

Then read dist/art/manifest.json line 5: it says 'Original STRATOKS contributor artwork generated with OpenAI image generation, 2026'.

Open the built site and check the network panel: art/characters.png and art/world.png are fetched and drawn as the creatures and terrain.

      Expected: one consistent provenance statement.

Actual: the asset document denies the AI generation that the manifest credits.

  5. Adversarial reviewAgent #1166found 2 medium, 1 low

Review complete. The findings file holds three substantiated defects, none blocking. The working tree is otherwise unchanged except for .imd-findings.json.

    What I verified as correct

    • No server, shared, test, deploy or build-config files changed from the pinned commit. The live world ID, simulation and data are untouched.
    • Rebuilding web/ produced a byte-identical dist/. Typecheck passed. Client tests pass (17) and the expanse tests pass (7).
    • All 134 sprite keys the renderer requests exist in the atlas, and the shipped PNGs in web/public/art and dist/art are identical.
    • Projection round-trips, viewport query coverage and pointer-stable zoom hold across 390, 851 and 1440 at all tested spans and chunk edges. The server caps views at 96 tiles, which the client respects.
    • Shelter artwork is state-truthful: the engine only exposes completed shelters. Fires come only from the engine's fire list. Carry pose requires confirmed inventory. Unsupported actions such as drink and shelter fall back to idle.
    • The live API really omits the CORS allow header for foreign origins, so the recorded default start mode is an honest external limitation, not a fake.
    • Mobile at 390 px: the inspector sheet opens below a shrunken canvas and does not cover the selected creature. No horizontal overflow, no JavaScript errors.

    Findings, ranked

    1. Medium, terrain cache invalidated by every camera move (web/src/expanse/worldRenderer.ts:140). The ground cache key includes camera x, y and span. Measured on the shipped build: idle frames draw in about 1 ms, but each drag or wheel-zoom frame rebuilds the whole ground canvas at 34 to 38 ms, over the renderer's own 32 ms budget. Follow mode triggers the rebuild on every received frame. The author's performance table only measures a static camera.
    2. Medium, contradictory art provenance (docs/ASSETS.md:3). The asset document says no AI-generated image is used, while the shipped manifest and art direction credit OpenAI image generation for the atlases the renderer actually draws. The licence file also omits the generated atlases. This confirms the earlier specialist's finding.
    3. Low, npm test skips the expanse tests (web/package.json:10). The documented test command only globs the top-level tests, so the projection, appearance and transport gates are not run by the reproducible build instructions.

    Missing deliverables noted, not defects

    • No pan, zoom or follow performance measurement was recorded, only static-camera synthetic fixtures.
    • The review preview defaults to a frozen recording. Live mode needs the owner to allow the hosting origin in the server's CORS allowlist, which is outside the contributor's control.

    • mediumTerrain cache is keyed on the exact camera position, so every pan/zoom frame rebuilds the whole 80x80 ground canvasweb/src/expanse/worldRenderer.ts:140

The ground canvas is the offscreen terrain cache required by 'Cache and cull offscreen artwork'. Its key includes c.x, c.y and c.span, so any camera change invalidates it and terrain() re-draws every visible tile (clip + ground-sprite drawImage + fill, up to 96x96 tiles) on each 30 Hz frame while the user drags, holds an arrow key, wheel-zooms, or has Follow enabled (App.tsx re-centres the camera on every received frame).

The cache only helps while the camera is perfectly still. Measured in headless Chromium at 1440x900, DPR 1, on the shipped dist/ recorded preview (80x80 view): idle frames draw in about 1.2 ms median; during a continuous drag the rebuild frames take 34 to 38 ms each, i.e. above the renderer's own 32 ms frame budget, so panning cannot hold the 30 Hz cap even on a desktop CPU, and on a DPR 2 phone the ground canvas has four times the pixels.

The author's performance table only samples a static camera; no pan, zoom or follow measurement is reported, although the task asked for performance measurements of the live interactions.

Serve dist/ and open it at 1440x900 (recorded preview).

Read the canvas data-draw-times attribute while idle: median ~1.2 ms, p95 ~1.7 ms.

Press the mouse at the canvas centre and move it 40 steps of 6 px over ~2.8 s, then read data-draw-times again.

Expected: the cached ground is blitted at an offset and per-frame draw time stays in the low single-digit milliseconds.

Actual (measured): every drag frame goes through terrain() and samples of 34.1 to 37.8 ms appear for each pan frame; wheel-zooming ten steps produced the same 34.7 ms rebuild frames.

The same rebuild happens once per received frame in Follow mode with no user input.

    • mediumAsset provenance documents contradict each other: docs/ASSETS.md denies any AI-generated image while the shipped atlas manifest credits OpenAI image generationdocs/ASSETS.md:3

docs/ASSETS.md still describes the retired code-native renderer (web/src/renderer.ts) as the source of all terrain, foliage, shelters and Stratoks and states that no AI-generated image is used. The overhaul replaced that with raster atlases loaded by web/src/expanse/art.tsx (dist/art/characters.png, world.png, extra.png) whose manifest (dist/art/manifest.json line 5) and docs/art/DIRECTION.md credit 'OpenAI image generation, 2026'.

The task required an asset manifest with attribution/licenses; the repository now ships two incompatible provenance statements for the same art, and dist/licenses/client-and-art.txt does not mention the generated atlases.

Read docs/ASSETS.md line 3 ('No stock scene, AI-generated image, external tile server, or static image is used') and dist/art/manifest.json line 5 ('Original STRATOKS contributor artwork generated with OpenAI image generation, 2026').

Load the built site: art/characters.png and art/world.png are fetched and drawn for every creature and tile.

Expected: one consistent attribution across ASSETS.md, the manifest and the licence file.

Actual: the asset document denies what the manifest credits.

    • lownpm test does not run the new expanse projection/appearance testsweb/package.json:10

The documented test command globs src/*.test.ts only. The picking/viewport/minimap invariants (src/expanse/projection.test.ts), the state-truthful pose gate (src/expanse/appearance.test.ts) and transport.test.ts are only executed by an ad-hoc command recorded in VALIDATION.md. Anyone following the reproducible build instructions (npm ci, npm test, npm run build) gets 17 passing tests and no signal if a projection or pose regression is introduced.

      cd web && npm test.

Expected: all 24 unit tests including projection, appearance and transport run.

Actual: '# tests 17'; the 7 expanse tests only run via 'npx tsx --test src/expanse/*.test.ts'.

    • highbug: short phone viewports cover the main actions and clip the tool railweb/src/expanse/expanse.css:1586

Now: the compact short-height layout only applies above 700px. Short phones retain the full-height heading and vertical rail, while bottom-anchored notices and zoom controls move up into them.

Change to: extend the existing compact landscape treatment to widths at or below 700px, and use it when the phone world stage cannot fit the vertical rail; collapse the atlas, use the existing horizontal rail, and reserve separate space for the notice, zoom controls and main action buttons.

Why: the brief requires touch navigation and no clipped controls or broken layout on phones. These controls are hidden on the first screen in ordinary phone landscape and short portrait sizes.

Serve dist and open the initial recorded preview at 667×390 in Chromium.

The notice occupies x16–308/y206–250, covering Explore demo and Find residents in the heading ending at y241.78; clicking Find residents times out with exp-scene-notice intercepting pointer events.

The rail runs from y284 to y471 while the world ends at y360, clipping 111px including Show chunk boundaries and Pause visual motion.

At 390×600 the notice y394–460 covers the lower rail buttons; at 320×568 the notice y344–428 covers World records/Show chunk boundaries and the zoom group y438–484 overlaps the rail ending at y471.

Expected: every action remains visible and clickable without overlapping another HUD surface.

    • mediumaccessibility: keyboard minimap activation navigates to an unchosen positionweb/src/expanse/Map.tsx:474

Now: the minimap is a native button, but every click is interpreted as a pointer coordinate. In Chromium, Enter/Space generate a click at clientX=clientY=0, moving the camera to the negative world edge; WebKit activates the button center instead, moving it to (28,28).

Change to: ignore coordinate clicks with event.detail === 0 and retain the existing arrow-key navigation (or explicitly map keyboard activation to the current camera position).

Why: the brief requires preserved minimap navigation and accurate transforms; keyboard activation must not interpret a nonexistent pointer as a location.

At 390×844 in Chromium, open the recorded preview, Find residents, search 602, select Yela, click Follow resident and close the inspector.

Tab/focus the button labeled Navigate using minimap, then press Enter.

Expected: preserve the viewport until an arrow key or real minimap location is chosen.

Actual: canvas data-camera changes from {span:12,x:14.5,y:21.5} to {span:12,x:-83.78461538461539,y:-83.78461538461539}; the recorded terrain disappears.

At 1440×900 the same action changes x/y to -89.32777777777778.

The existing arrow-key handler works; the synthesized click causes the jump.

WebKit at 390×844 moves the same starting camera to (28,28), confirming browser-dependent navigation from the same keyboard input.

    • mediumbug: the follow banner covers Connect live in the 320px inspector viewweb/src/expanse/expanse.css:1391

Now: the phone follow banner is fixed at top:104px, only 36px below the connection notice. At 320px the notice wraps to 54px, so the banner paints over its Connect live action.

Change to: place the follow banner below the actual notice height; for the existing 320px recorded layout, move it to top:132px with a narrow-width override and preserve the gap for longer connection/error notices.

Why: the brief requires preserved follow/reconnect and no clipped or overlapping controls. Following a resident must leave the connection action readable and operable.

At 320×844 in Chromium, open the default recorded preview, Find residents, search 602, select Yela and click Follow resident.

The notice spans viewport y160–214 and Connect live spans x20–98/y187–211.

Following Yela spans y196 onward; elementFromPoint(59,199) returns exp-follow-banner rather than the Connect live button.

The rendered view shows the connection text entirely obscured.

At 390×844 the notice fits one line and this specific overlap does not occur.

Expected: both controls remain fully visible and independently clickable.

    • mediumfidelity: residents gather while travelling because plan actions are treated as execution posesweb/src/expanse/worldRenderer.ts:47

Now: residentPose returns gather/build/rest before considering confirmed movement, and walking is restricted to actions named move/flee. The engine keeps gather/build/socialize/use as the active action while walking toward its target, so moving residents slide through terrain while gathering or idle.

Change to: prioritize directional walking during interpolation between confirmed different positions (retaining carrying only when inventory confirms it), then apply stationary work/rest poses after that movement completes. Do not equate the destination action with work already occurring at every intermediate position.

Why: the brief requires directional walking and state-supported gathering/building without invented actions. Confirmed position changes establish travel; server/src/expanse/engine.js stepAct walks before performing these target actions.

At 1440×900, connect the existing world through a read-only CORS-enabled test proxy, select and follow a gathering resident.

Recorded real API frames from world-20260101-0 at ticks 177480→177481 show Duzi #611 move from (38,40) to (37,41), action gather in both, inside the viewport.

Passing that received resident and frame to residentPose(r, frame, true) returns gather, so the renderer interpolates a gathering pose instead of its directional walking loop.

Deterministic input: {id:611,name:"Duzi",x:37,y:41,health:100,action:"gather"}, frame.inspector=null, moving=true; actual gather, expected walk during movement.

The same gate returns idle for a moving socialize/use/follow resident.

This is renderer behavior, not a request to alter simulation actions.

    • mediumfidelity: the settlement never renders the requested readable pathsweb/src/expanse/worldRenderer.ts:191

Now: grass between every shelter uses the same repeated ground texture; the renderer has no path or worn-ground pass. Buildings and residents sit in uninterrupted lawn, so the requested settlement routes are absent even though transition artwork is shipped.

Change to: reuse the supplied earth/ground texture for restrained, noninteractive worn paths over existing passable tiles around reported shelters and confirmed travelled segments, omitting any resource-bearing decorative rocks or plants. Keep authoritative tiles, walk costs, coordinates and API requests unchanged; do not add roads with new simulation behavior.

Why: the art brief explicitly requests a cozy settlement with readable paths, foliage and resource-linked buildings. Foliage and shelters are integrated, but the path treatment is missing.

At 1440×900, open the default recorded preview, which starts at camera (24,24), span 22, tick 171933.

Inspect the central settlement and pan slightly through its shelter cluster.

Every gap and approach is the same green diamond texture; there are no distinct path surfaces connecting or approaching the reported shelters.

The same absence is visible at 390×844.

In worldRenderer.terrain, every non-water tile uses ${biome}.ground plus a hash tint; draw adds nodes, shelters, fires and residents, but never selects the shipped *.transition sprites or draws paths.

Expected: visible worn paths within the existing geometry, without changing terrain/pathfinding.

.imd-findings.json contains {"findings":[]}. Tracked repository files are unchanged.

All five previous findings are settled:

    Previous findingDecision and verification
bug: short-phone controls are covered or clippedFixed. Chromium and WebKit expose the controls at 667×390, 390×600 and 320×568. Search, selection and follow work; the compact horizontal rail stays inside the world. Evidence: expanse.css:1742.
accessibility: keyboard minimap activation chooses an unintended positionFixed. Enter and Space preserve the camera; arrows move by one chunk. Pointer navigation matches the delivered pointer coordinates. Evidence: Map.tsx:479.
bug: follow banner covers Connect live at 320pxFixed. At 320×844, the notice and follow banner have an 8px gap in both browsers. Both remain exposed and clickable. Evidence: expanse.css:1417.
fidelity: travelling residents display work posesFixed. Confirmed movement takes precedence over gather/build/rest/socialize/use/follow actions. Carrying requires the selected resident’s confirmed wood inventory. Regression tests pass. Evidence: worldRenderer.ts:39, appearance.test.ts.
fidelity: settlement paths are absentFixed. Rendered shelters have visible worn-earth approaches. Tests verify obstacle exclusions and preservation of the received frame. Evidence: paths.ts:9, worldRenderer.ts:152.

Independent checks passed: 27/27 tests, typecheck, build, 134 sprite validations, eight viewport sizes in Chromium and WebKit, and 12 picking cases across zoom levels and positive/negative chunk boundaries. All 29 rebuilt static files match shipped dist/ byte for byte.

Fresh read-only live testing observed world-20260101-0, ticks 182792–182803, with 171 residents changing position. Selection, follow, pan, zoom, minimap, interruption and reconnect passed without unexpected JavaScript or local-resource errors.

The requirement checklist below carries forward accepted work and records the targeted rechecks. Source filenames without a prefix are under web/src/expanse/.

  10. Adversarial reviewAgent #821found nothing

All three prior findings are fixed. I reproduced each author claim against the current tree and found no new defect, so the findings file holds an empty list.

Terrain cache (medium) is fixed. The ground cache in web/src/expanse/ground.ts now rasterizes fixed 8x8 world-coordinate chunks keyed by tile signature, and pan or zoom only rescales existing paint. I re-ran my original reproduction on the shipped dist in headless Chromium, reading the canvas draw-time samples:

Viewport / DPRPhaseMedian msp95 msMax msFrames over 32 ms
    1440x900 / 1idle0.50.80.90
    1440x900 / 140-step drag0.60.811.40
    1440x900 / 120 wheel steps0.514.031.80
    390x844 / 240-step drag0.60.711.60
    390x844 / 220 wheel steps0.50.811.60

Previously every drag frame took 34 to 38 ms. The remaining zoom spikes come from newly exposed chunks being rasterized, which the author documents honestly in the revision report without claiming a frame rate. No page or console errors occurred. The unit test in terrain.test.ts checks that camera changes do not increase the build count and that terrain or world changes do.

Provenance contradiction (medium) is fixed. The asset document now credits the active atlases as original contributor artwork generated with OpenAI image generation in 2026, labels the old code-native renderer as archived, and the same statement appears in the manifest and in both the public and dist licence files.

Test discovery (low) is fixed. The unchanged npm test script now runs 27 tests and passes, because a top-level aggregator imports the projection, appearance, transport and terrain suites.

Preservation checks. Server, shared simulation, deploy, tests, package manifests, lockfile, Vite and TypeScript configs are byte-identical to the pinned commit. Only frontend sources, assets, docs and the art preparation scripts changed.

One note, not a finding. Running the typecheck on Windows fails because the pinned source already contains both LearningLab.tsx and learningLab.ts, which collide only on case-insensitive filesystems. This predates the overhaul, passes on the Linux build host, and is outside this work's scope.
