  3. Design criticAgent #880found 5 medium, 2 low

I couldn't run the browser or the taste probe in this session, so this review comes from reading the source only. I found seven problems and none is high; they are in .imd-findings.json, and no other file was changed.

Why nothing was run: Bash failed every time ("Sandbox is required but failed to initialize: Failed to create bridge sockets"), and the browser tool reported "chrome-for-testing is not installed". So I clicked nothing in Chromium or WebKit, have no screenshots, and the 390px heights in the findings are added up from src/styles.css, not measured. Running node .imd/reads/skills/design-critic/scripts/taste.mjs --out test/scratch/taste would settle them.

    AreaCount
Brief requirements7 met, 0 missing, 0 faked; 2 after review or needs the requester
Broken features1 (local duel: Player 1 always moves first)
Product on first screen at 390yes (read from source; the hero's "Enter the arena" button is on screen)
taste@1 checks passedprobe did not run (sandbox down, no browser)
Copy findings4 (slogan stack, "Welcome back" for a new visitor, fee notes, em dash in the title)

    Requirements

    • "Hatch": met. The hatchery and its egg cards (EggCard, doHatch in src/App.tsx, hatchEgg in src/game.ts).
    • "Battle": met. BattleBoard with Strike, Guard and Elemental burst against an AI rival.
    • "Conquer": met. Wins and XP move the practice rank (awardBattle, the sidebar rank panel).
    • "Command your dragon eggs": met. Collection, filters and choosing a dragon for battle (the #dragons view).
    • "the ultimate PvP showdown": met as local PvP (DuelBoard.tsx, two players on one device), but it is buried (finding 1).
    • Online PvP across devices: needs the requester: a matchmaking service and accounts. The page says plainly that online matchmaking is not connected (.arena-disclosure, the help text).
    • "strategy": met. Charge, guarding, the heavy strike every third turn, and element advantages (playDuelMove).
    • "mythical creatures" and the name "Myth Arena": met. Four dragons and their art; the brand, the title and the headline.
    • Hosting and a live URL: after review.

The idea: a dark forest-green keeper's dashboard carried by one dragon painting and the serif headline "Hatch. Battle. Conquer." (the last word in green). Keep those two. Cut the repeated "legend" and "journey" taglines and the small sparkle in the hero's corner.

    Findings

    1. Medium, fidelity: the brief sells a PvP showdown, but the hero line never says PvP and the arena opens on AI practice (src/App.tsx:553, src/App.tsx:813). Fix: the line becomes "Hatch dragons, then duel a friend on one device." and the arena starts on "Local PvP".
    2. Medium, bug: in a local duel Player 1 always moves first, rematch included (src/game.ts:253). If both players pick Ashwing and press Strike every turn, Player 1 always wins on turn 9. Fix: alternate who starts on each rematch.
    3. Medium, bug: a first-time visitor is greeted "Welcome back, Dragonkeeper" (src/App.tsx:792). Fix: delete the welcome row; the hero moves up about 38px.
    4. Medium, taste: seven taglines repeat "legend" and "journey" across the views. The finding gives replacement text for each one.
    5. Medium, taste: at 390, the "Start battle" button on the arena view sits at about 1000px, below a 190px decorative image (src/styles.css:2647). Fix: hide that image at 520px and below.
    6. Low, taste: "No entry fee" and "Free entry" notes hint at a cost in a game where nothing costs anything.
    7. Low, taste: the page title and og:title use an em dash; use a colon instead.

    • mediumfidelity: the brief's "ultimate PvP showdown" is the second, unselected mode; the hero line and the arena default both lead to AI practicesrc/App.tsx:813

Now: the hero line under "Hatch. Battle. Conquer." never says PvP, and the arena opens on AI practice because the mode state starts as "ai" (src/App.tsx:553 const [mode, setMode] = useState<"ai" | "local">("ai");). PvP appears only in the 12px hero footnote and as the second toggle.

Change to: hero line "Hatch dragons, then duel a friend on one device." and the default mode value "local" (src/App.tsx:553). AI practice stays one tap away on the same toggle.

Why: the brief sells "the ultimate PvP showdown of Myth Arena". Local same-device PvP is the build's real version of that, so it should be the headline action, not the fallback.

      Width 390.

Open #overview: the hero reads "Raise mythical dragons in a tactical battle game." and PvP appears only in the footnote "Free to play · Local practice & PvP".

Tap "Enter the arena": the "AI practice" toggle is pressed (aria-pressed=true), the heading is "Choose your champion" and the button says "Start battle" against Thornmaw.

Source: App.tsx:553 initial mode "ai"; App.tsx:813 hero copy.

Read from the source: the in-session browser could not launch (chrome-for-testing not installed).

    • mediumbug: Player 1 always moves first in a local duel, rematch included, so a mirror match with the same moves is always won by Player 1src/game.ts:253

Now: startDuel always sets active: 0 and logs "Player 1 moves first.", and "Start rematch" calls startDuel(game.selected, rival) with the same order (src/App.tsx:1237). With equal dragons and equal choices, Player 1 lands the deciding hit a half-turn earlier every time.

Change to: give startDuel a third argument, starter: 0 | 1, and set active: starter with the log line Player ${starter + 1} moves first.. The rematch passes the other player than last time, so the first move alternates (a value change in game.ts plus one argument at App.tsx:1237).

Why: the brief promises a PvP showdown where "strategy meets" might. A fixed first-mover advantage means the opening seat, not strategy, decides the duel.

Any width. #arena, then "Local PvP".

Player 1 picks Ashwing, Player 2 picks "Ashwing · Fire", then "Start local duel".

Both players press Strike every turn.

Per playDuelMove: Fire vs Fire gives bonus 1, so each hit does 24 damage.

      Player 1 strikes on turns 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, and Player 2's HP goes 96, 72, 48, 24, 0 on turn 9, before Player 2's fifth strike.

Result: "Player 1 conquers the arena."

Press "Start rematch" and the log again reads "Local duel begins.

      Player 1 moves first."

      Same outcome.

Expected: the second duel starts with Player 2.

    • mediumbug: a first-time visitor is greeted "Welcome back, Dragonkeeper" although no save existssrc/App.tsx:792

Now: the welcome row above the hero always says "Welcome back". With no localStorage entry, loadGame returns newGame() (name "Dragonkeeper"), so a stranger's first sight is a claim the app cannot know. At 1060px and below, its second half ("Your legend, in the making") is hidden, so the row holds only that line.

Change to: delete the whole .welcome-row block (src/App.tsx:790-798) and its CSS. The hero moves up by the row's ~38px (font-size 14px line plus 17px margin at 760px and below), and so do the stats strip and the first egg cards. The keeper name stays reachable in the profile button and modal.

Why: every state should say only what the app knows. It also removes one more slogan from the page (see the slogan finding).

      Width 390 (also 1440).

Fresh profile: clear the localStorage key "myth-arena-v1" and load #overview.

The first text under the header reads "Welcome back, Dragonkeeper" even though loadGame() took the if (!raw) return { game: newGame(), warning: "" } branch (src/game.ts:121).

Expected: no returning-visitor greeting on a first visit.

    • mediumtaste: a stack of taglines repeats "legend" and "journey" across every view instead of saying what each section holdssrc/App.tsx:1405

Now: on top of the hero pair, the page carries "Your legend, in the making" (App.tsx:796), "A little egg. A legendary journey." (footer, App.tsx:1405), "Every egg, a new legend." (App.tsx:1011), "Big things start small." (App.tsx:1079), "Meet your legends." followed by "One unforgettable journey. Choose your next champion." (App.tsx:1101-1106), "A safe place to find your fire." (App.tsx:1311) and "Every legend learns." (App.tsx:472). That is four or more slogans, and "legend" appears six times.

Change to: footer span becomes "Myth Arena" (keep the BrandMark). Dragons subline becomes "{n} dragons. Open one to see its stats and pick it for battle." (keep the computed count). Info banner heading becomes "Three eggs, three different dragons." Arena AI subline becomes "Thornmaw, an AI rival, attacks heavily every third turn." Delete "Your legend, in the making" with the welcome row. Keep "Hatch. Battle. Conquer." and "Every egg, a new legend." as the only display slogans.

Why: cut the stack, not the best line. A fact or a noun beats an adjective, and the hero pair is the brief's own words.

      Any width.

Visit #overview, #hatchery, #dragons and #arena and read the headings and sublines.

On #overview at 1440 the welcome row reads "Your legend, in the making" and the footer reads "A little egg.

      A legendary journey."

On #dragons the subline reads "1 dragon.

      One unforgettable journey.

      Choose your next champion."

On #hatchery the banner reads "Big things start small."

On #arena (AI mode) it reads "A safe place to find your fire."

Seven taglines in total, quoted from the source lines above.

    • mediumtaste: at 390 the arena's "Start battle" button sits about 1000px down, below a 190px decorative arena illustrationsrc/styles.css:2647

Now: at 520px and below, the arena-entry card stacks a 190px ArenaArt image above the difficulty picker and the only "Start battle" / "Start local duel" button. It comes after the page heading, the mode toggle and the full champion list, so the main action of the arena view lands below the first phone screen.

Change to: in the @media (max-width: 520px) block, set .arena-entry > .arena-art { display: none; } in place of height 190px. The h2, difficulty radios and Start button move up 190px, and the card opens on its heading. Desktop keeps the art.

Why: the main action has to be on the screen the visitor lands on. Here the image is decoration (the same ArenaArt already appears on #overview).

Width 390, height 844, fresh profile (1 dragon).

      Tap "Enter the arena".

      Estimated from the stylesheet (the in-session browser could not launch): topbar 68 + main top padding 20 + page heading ~124 + mode toggle 44+24 + arena-choose card ~294 + grid gap 24 + arena art 190 + h2/p ~60 + difficulty fieldset ~148, so the Start button's top is at ~996px.

The visible area ends at 774px (844 minus the 70px fixed .mobile-nav).

With all 4 dragons hatched, each extra champion option adds ~90px.

Expected: the button is visible without scrolling, or at least the 190px decoration does not sit above it.

    • lowtaste: "No entry fee" and "Free entry" notes suggest a cost that never existedsrc/App.tsx:925

Now: the overview arena card says "No entry fee · All skill levels" and the arena setup says "Free entry · Full health every battle" (App.tsx:1380). Nothing in the game costs anything, and the hero footnote already says "Free to play".

Change to: delete the overview .arena-note span (the card ends at its "Find a battle" button). Change App.tsx:1380 to "Battles start at full health.", which is the one fact a player needs.

Why: replacement copy must be true and plain. A fee disclaimer for a free local game is noise and implies money is involved.

Any width. #overview: under "Find a battle" it reads "No entry fee · All skill levels". #arena in AI mode: under "Start battle" it reads "Free entry · Full health every battle". No code path in src/game.ts charges anything.

    • lowtaste: the page title and og:title use an em dashindex.html:7

Now: the tab title and og:title (index.html:13) read "Myth Arena — Hatch. Battle. Conquer."

Change to: "Myth Arena: Hatch. Battle. Conquer." in both tags.

Why: no em dashes in interface text. This string is what shows in the tab and in the link unfurl when someone posts the site.

      Any width.

Load dist/index.html and read document.title: "Myth Arena — Hatch.

      Battle.

      Conquer."

      (U+2014).

The meta property="og:title" content holds the same string.
