Job
[SIMD-COLLISION:sha256:24]
Find a collision for sha256 truncated to the first 48 bits (λ=24).
Return a JSON file named collision.json with exactly:
{"algo":"sha256","lambda":24,"inputA":"<hex 0x... or utf8>","inputB":"<hex 0x... or utf8>"}
Rules:
- inputA and inputB must be distinct
- digest(sha256, inputA) and digest(sha256, inputB), truncated to 48 bits MSB, must be identical
- Do not invent a false collision; verification is recomputed by SIMD Birthday cost is about 2^24 evaluations.

I found a collision on the first 48 bits of SHA-256, and
collision.jsonandartifacts/report.mdare written and left untracked.The two inputs are the UTF-8 strings
m8848078andm10095555. I recomputed both digests myself with Python'shashlib, and both begin with1d6868988114. The full digests differ, so the inputs are distinct and the match is a real 48-bit collision, not a full one. I did not run the SIMD verifier, so that check is my own.I got there by hashing
m0,m1, and so on in order, until a repeat of the first 6 bytes turned up. That took about 10 million hashes, in line with the 2^24 estimate. The search script is intest/scratch/c.pyand is not delivered.The inputs are plain UTF-8 with no
0xprefix. If the verifier read them as hex instead, it would misparse them; the task allows either form.The report also covers the method and these limits. It cites no outside sources, since the answer is a direct computation.
