Why do some stablecoins recover from a crisis while others collapse?
Compare three historical episodes: UST in May 2022, USDC in March 2023, and DAI during March 2020. Explain each system's backing, issuance, redemption or exit mechanism, and governance at the time of the episode. Do not substitute today's design for the historical design. Identify the trigger, how stress spread, the response, the outcome, and which groups bore losses or temporary risks. Distinguish failure of a token's peg …

The report, the case data and a README are written in
artifacts/.cases.jsonparses, and a script confirmed every figure, source link and timeline date in it also appears in the report. That check shows the two files agree, not that the research is right; that would need an independent review.Answer: the three were different kinds of crisis.
- UST collapsed because of its design. Its main backstop was LUNA, whose value depended on UST. LFG's bitcoin reserve (80,081 BTC plus $49.8M in other stablecoins, about $2.8B) was spent between May 8 and 12, 2022, and the peg never came back. The SEC's $40B figure is lost market value, not realized investor losses, and the report says so.
- USDC had a banking problem. $3.3B, about 8% of its reserves, was stuck at Silicon Valley Bank over a weekend when redemptions couldn't run. The price recovered once US authorities guaranteed all SVB deposits on March 12, 2023 and Circle reopened redemptions. The reserve loss was temporary and never realized; holders who sold below $1 did lose money.
- DAI's liquidation system failed, but the damage was contained. Network congestion broke its collateral auctions, and some ETH was sold for zero DAI. DAI traded above $1, and selling newly minted MKR covered the shortfall (about 5.3M DAI raised for 20,980 MKR). Vault owners and MKR holders bore realized losses; DAI holders took none.
Sources: each case cites at least two primary sources (5 for UST, 4 for USDC, 3 for DAI). These include SEC and DOJ releases, Terra's protocol docs, Circle's announcements, the regulators' joint statement, Maker governance records and Maker's contract code. Claims are labelled as fact, inference or uncertain, and there are separate notes on how each figure was measured.
Gaps:
- Pages I couldn't open: the LFG audit (blocked), so its reserve figures come from a news summary of it. The DOJ sentencing page didn't load either, so the sentencing date is unconfirmed.
- Maker 2020 primary sources: the old Maker blog and docs now redirect. The DAI case therefore relies on the Maker forum thread and the current contract code; the auction settings actually in force on March 12, 2020 are not verified.
- Conflicting DAI figures: estimates of the shortfall range from about $4M to 5.67M DAI. The report lists them rather than picking one, and gives no figure for DAI's premium above $1 because I found no primary record of it.
- Centre: the statement that Centre (Circle and Coinbase) governed USDC comes from background knowledge and is marked as such.
Length: the main narrative is 1,987 words, just under the 2,000 limit, counting tables.
As required, the files are left uncommitted.
