  3. Design criticAgent #1207found 2 medium, 2 low

The site meets the brief: every requirement the build can deliver is met, the first screen at 390 px shows the live numbers, and the design probe passed all 16 checks. I found four issues, two medium and two low, and none of them reopens the build. They are in .imd-findings.json, and no repository files were changed.

    Requirements

    • "Cumulative work units": met. The Cumulative work card, src/App.tsx:509, showed 45,758 from the live API.
    • "current wheel speed": met. The Wheel speed card shows RPM (worked out from rpmMilli) and mm/s, src/App.tsx:516.
    • "core status (SPINNING/IDLE)": met. The tag in the wheel panel reads "Idle", src/App.tsx:565.
    • "current block height": met. The Current block card showed 4,118, src/App.tsx:527.
    • "block progress %": met. It is blockProgress / 1e9, shown in the card and in the progress meter (src/data.ts:97, src/App.tsx:640).
    • "24h settlements": met. The 24h settlements card (144), the hourly chart and the list of settlements.
    • "Auto-refresh every 10 seconds" / "All numbers update automatically": met. A 10-second timer in src/useDashboard.ts:46 re-fetches all three APIs.
    • "A short intro… hamster-powered PoW chain…": met. The line under the h1 at src/App.tsx:450 and the About section.
    • "shows live numbers without any backend": met. The page fetches straight from api.squeekchain.com in the browser; the probe rendered it with no errors.
    • "README is complete": met. README.md covers running it locally, the data sources and the files.
    • "public GitHub repository", "publicly accessible deployed website", "job page link": after review.

The idea: a calm green live readout of one hamster's wheel, carried by the wheel illustration that turns only while the hamster is running.

    Findings

    1. Medium, copy: chatty lines on a dashboard: the wheel caption "Taking a well-earned breather", the heading "Straight from the source" and the footer "Powered by one very small miner." Replace them with plain status text and the heading "Data sources".
    2. Medium, accuracy: the "Recent settlements" list stops at round 518 (04:10 UTC). At the same moment the status API said settled through round 534, and the economy panel shows "Current round 535". The API returns only 10 of the 144 settlements, which the page explains only when the list is empty. Change the subtitle to a computed "10 of 144 settlements… the API returns a sample".
    3. Low, taste: block progress reads "50.3%" on the card and "50.35%" on the meter. Use two decimals in both.
    4. Low, bug: the "Pause illustration" button toggles while the wheel is idle but nothing on screen changes. Disable it unless the wheel is spinning.

    What I couldn't check:

    • Safari (WebKit): I couldn't install WebKit on this machine, so the main page wasn't tested in Safari. Everything above is from Chromium.
    • Error states: I walked through the loading, error and stale states in the code, not by forcing the APIs to fail.

    • mediumtaste: voice lines on a data dashboard (wheel caption, sources heading, footer tagline)src/App.tsx:581

Now: the wheel scene caption reads 'Taking a well-earned breather' (IDLE) or 'A little movement. A new block closer.' (SPINNING); the sources section is headed 'Straight from the source' (line 763); the footer adds 'Powered by one very small miner.' (line 790). Core status is already stated twice in the same panel (tag and readout), so the caption adds only voice.

Change to: caption shows only what the app knows: stale ? 'Waiting for fresh telemetry' : s?.core === 'IDLE' ? 'Wheel idle, 0 RPM' : spinning ? Wheel spinning, ${formatNumber(s.rpm)} RPM : 'Waiting for the wheel sensor'; rename the h2 at line 763 to 'Data sources'; delete the footer span at line 790 and let the 'All timestamps in UTC' line sit beside the brand.

Why: a dashboard is read to get a task done; headings name the task in plain words and there is no voice line (design-critic copy rule). The brief's intro requirement is already met by the h1 subtitle and the About section.

Width 390 and 1440, load dist/index.html with the live API (coreStatus was IDLE at 06:58 UTC 30 Oct). Screenshot test/scratch/taste/shots/1440.png shows 'Taking a well-earned breather' under the wheel; 390-full.png shows 'Straight from the source' and 'Powered by one very small miner.' at the page foot.

    • mediumfidelity: 'Recent settlements' list stops at round 518 while the page says round 535 is currentsrc/App.tsx:247

Now: the panel is titled 'Recent settlements' and shows 10 rows, newest 'Round 518' at 04:10:36 UTC, while the status anchor in the same fetch is settled through round 534 (confirmedAt 06:50:36) and the Chain economy panel shows 'Current round 535'. The API returns 10 of the 144 settlements in the summary (archivedSettlementCount 134), so rounds 519-534 never appear and a reader concludes they were not settled. The explanation 'The API may return fewer entries than the summary total' exists only in the empty state (line 342).

Change to: title 'Settlements returned by the API' and subtitle computed from the data: ${rows.length} of ${formatInteger(resource.data?.count)} settlements in the last 24 hours. The API returns a sample, not every one. (render only when resource.data exists).

Why: brief asks to show '24h settlements'; a list labelled recent that silently skips the latest 16 rounds misstates the live data; replacement copy is computed so it stays true.

      Width 390.

Load the page, scroll to the settlements panel: first row 'Round 518 ...

      04:10:36'.

      Same moment, GET https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status returned builder.anchor.settledThroughRound '534', confirmedAt 2026-10-30T06:50:36Z; GET /v1/settlements?range=24h returned summary.settlementCount '144' and recentSettlements rounds [518,517,516,515,502,501,500,499,497,496].

Economy panel shows 'Current round 535'.

    • lowtaste: block progress shown at two precisions (50.3% and 50.35%) on one pagesrc/App.tsx:537

Now: the Current block card says '50.3% complete' (formatNumber default 1 digit) and the 'Building the next block' meter says '50.35%' (line 648, 2 digits) for the same blockProgress value.

Change to: formatNumber(s.progress, 2) at line 537 so both read '50.35%'.

Why: one quantity has one format across the page (design-critic data rule); two different numbers for the same reading make a reader ask which is right.

      Width 1440.

Load with live API (blockProgress 503463521).

Screenshot 1440.png: card shows '50.3% complete'; 390-full.png meter shows '50.35%'.

Expected the same string in both places.

    • lowbug: 'Pause illustration' button stays active while the wheel is idle and does nothingsrc/App.tsx:599

Now: the pause/resume button renders whenever the panel renders. Wheel.tsx:10 only animates when spinning && !paused, so with coreStatus IDLE or stale telemetry pressing it toggles its icon and aria-pressed but nothing on screen changes.

Change to: pass disabled={!(spinning && !stale)} to the button (it keeps its look and title, and the existing disabled style applies), or render it only when the wheel is spinning.

Why: a control that visibly toggles yet changes nothing reads as broken.

Width 390 or 1440, live API with coreStatus IDLE (as at 06:58 UTC 30 Oct). Press the pause button under the wheel: icon flips to play, label to 'Resume illustration'; the wheel art was static before and after (Wheel.tsx:10 class 'is-spinning' absent both times).
