STRATOKS — RESTORE WALLET CONNECTION AND VERIFIED VISITOR ACCOUNTS

Extend the pinned owner repository and current Expanse interface, preserving the Docker shared/ fix. Deliver frontend AND owner-run backend; keep the simulation. No production access/deployment, new token, paid gameplay, contract deployment, asset approvals or transfers.

CURRENT FAILURE

WalletControl is stranded in the unused legacy interface. server/src/expanse/server.js rejects non-GET/HEAD requests. Integrate auth into this actual service. Review server/src/auth.js and web/src/wallet.tsx; adapt old transport and privileges.

WALLET UX

Add an accessible Connect wallet control to the current desktop/mobile HUD without covering controls. Discover injected EVM providers using EIP-6963 with a legacy fallback; let visitors choose when multiple wallets exist. Support MetaMask/Rabby and compatible injected providers; document tested providers. Support injected mobile browsers; otherwise explain requirements. Disclose untested wallets.

Show disconnected, connected, signing, verified, expired and unavailable states. Connecting alone is NOT authentication. Sign-in is an explicit readable message, free of gas/transactions; never request keys, approvals or eth_sendTransaction. Handle rejection, locked/missing providers, timeouts, offline backend, repeated clicks and late responses with recoverable errors, not permanently disabled buttons. Explain a disabled action's reason.

On accountsChanged, chainChanged and provider disconnect clear obsolete client authentication immediately and invalidate old session safely. Do not let delayed responses authenticate a different account/world. Treat network changes consistently with the signed challenge. Viewing stays free and walletless; login must not pause, reset or advance the world.

SERVER AUTHENTICATION

Expose bounded auth nonce/challenge, verify, current-session and logout endpoints on the current Expanse service. All other simulation routes remain read-only. Use a fresh single-use cryptographically random nonce, short expiry, exact address/domain/origin/URI binding, issued-at and explicit supported chain scope. Verify the exact server-issued message and recover its signer on the server. Validate message fields client-side before asking for signature. A supplied wallet address or localStorage value is never proof.

Bind sessions to verified address and permitted origin/world service; expire and revoke them. Logout must invalidate the old credential on the server; reject replay and expired sessions. Keep credentials out of URLs, logs and public frames. Choose a safe session transport compatible with owner same-origin hosting and exact allowlisted IMD HTTPS preview origins; document cookie/CSRF or bearer handling. No wildcard credentialed CORS. Bound body size, nonce/session stores and request rates; garbage collect expired entries; reject malformed input without crashing the world. Restrict OPTIONS and allowed methods/headers to auth routes where needed. Never derive admin rights from frontend flags or expose reset/payment/admin actions in this task.

A minimal private visitor profile may record normalized address, first/last verified visit and visit count. Keep it separate from world snapshots, write atomically, and preserve it across restart. Sessions may safely expire on server restart; explain this in UI. Do not fabricate resident recognition or social memories from login alone. Exclude private account data from public exports.

PRESERVATION AND INTEGRATION

Preserve world identity, population, brains/weights, goals, communication histories, relationships, terrain, schema and all current Expanse navigation/inspector controls. No forced resets or arbitrary culling. Keep the actual deployed same-origin live configuration and shared terrain Docker dependency. Isolated preview must clearly identify demo mode; only offer sign-in when its configured backend supports it. No fake login. Provide an isolated local auth demo and Docker/browser instructions; frontend hosting does not install the backend.

ACCEPTANCE

Tests must cover real cryptographic verification, wrong signer/address/origin/chain/message, reused/expired nonce, revoked/expired sessions, account switches mid-signature, network changes, rejected signature/retry, backend timeout/restart, logout, store/rate limits and absent/multiple wallets. Exercise actual HTTP handlers plus browser flow with a disposable test signer, never owner funds. Distinguish simulated-wallet tests from actual extension/device tests.

Run existing backend/client/build checks; verify copied-world migration/restart and unchanged anonymous world viewing. Prove the built ARM-compatible Docker image starts and includes required modules. Deliver source, static preview, versioned API contract, setup/rollback guide, screenshots and raw test evidence. List unresolved defects and setup requirements. Require server-verified login/logout.

Work

  1. Posted18 minto the first attempt
  2. Implement componentAgent #164134 files changed

Implemented server-verified Expanse visitor authentication, revocable sessions, bounded stores/rates, and atomic private profiles. Read-only world behavior and Docker’s shared-module fix are preserved.

Delivered the shared browser controller, isolated demo, API contract, setup/rollback guide, screenshots, and test evidence.

Passed: 224 backend tests, 20 focused auth tests, 34 client tests, typecheck/build, and 8 simulated-wallet browser scenarios.

Remaining: current HUD integration is outside permitted paths; Docker/ARM startup and actual wallet extensions/devices remain unverified. No production changes.

There are three findings in .imd-findings.json: two medium and one low. None is high. I changed no repository files; the probe's scratch folder has been deleted.

    Findings

    1. bug (medium), server/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:204: the rate limit is meant to be 60 requests per minute per visitor, but it is keyed on the network connection's address. The setup guide puts the service behind reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8788, so every request arrives from 127.0.0.1 and all visitors share one bucket of 60. Each signed-in tab checks its session every 30 seconds, so about 30 open tabs lock everyone else out of sign-in. The fix: an owner-set trusted-proxy option that reads the forwarded address.
    2. taste (medium), web/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:141: in the static preview, the account dialog says "there's no sign-in server here" twice. Delete line 141 and rewrite the reason line once.
    3. accessibility (low), VisitorWallet.tsx:121 and :124: two live regions (screen-reader status areas) hold the same status text, so every state change is announced twice. I measured this in the dialog at 390.

    Requirements

    • Wallet control in the current HUD, desktop and mobile, not covering controls: met. App.tsx:336, the button is 44px tall at 320 and 390, and the screenshots show nothing covered.
    • EIP-6963 discovery with a fallback to the older injected provider: met. shared/visitor-auth-client.js:8-20.
    • Visitor chooses when several wallets exist: met. Wallet list at VisitorWallet.tsx:129.
    • Supports MetaMask, Rabby and compatible wallets; tested and untested wallets disclosed: met as disclosure. "Privacy and wallet support" section, VisitorWallet.tsx:164.
    • Mobile in-wallet browsers supported, otherwise the requirement is explained: met. VisitorWallet.tsx:139.
    • Disconnected, connected, signing, verified, expired and unavailable states: met. labels at VisitorWallet.tsx:7.
    • Connecting is not signing in: met. Separate "Sign in with message" button, VisitorWallet.tsx:147.
    • Readable message with no gas, transaction, approval or key request: met. Only personal_sign is called, visitor-auth-client.js:144.
    • Recoverable errors, with a reason shown for disabled actions: met. readable() and the reason line; "Cancel attempt" at line 148.
    • accountsChanged, chainChanged and disconnect clear the session; late responses are ignored: met. visitor-auth-client.js:108-110, plus attempt-number checks.
    • Viewing stays free and walletless; login doesn't touch the world: met. The static preview works without a wallet.
    • Nonce, verify, session and logout endpoints on the current service: met. server/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js.
    • Fresh random single-use nonce, short expiry, exact binding, chain scope: met. 32 random bytes, 120-second lifetime, chains setting.
    • Message checked in the browser before signing; signer recovered on the server: met. validateChallenge and the server-side verify.
    • Sessions expire and are revoked; logout revokes on the server: met. docs/auth/API-v1.md and the auth tests.
    • Credential kept out of URLs and storage: met. Bearer token in memory only, visitor-auth-client.js:51.
    • Exact CORS origins, OPTIONS limited to auth routes: met. visitor-auth.js:213-219.
    • Bounded body size, stores and request rates: met in code. The limits exist, but finding 1 shows the documented proxy setup turns the per-visitor limit into one shared limit.
    • Private visitor profile written atomically, kept across restart, left out of public data: met. Temporary file plus rename at `vi

    • mediumbug: behind the documented reverse proxy every visitor shares one 60-request auth rate bucketserver/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:204

Now: the per-visitor limit (perIpRequests: 60 per 60 s) is keyed on req.socket.remoteAddress, but docs/auth/SETUP.md:65-70 tells the owner to put the service behind reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8788, so every request arrives from 127.0.0.1 and all visitors draw from one bucket. Each verified tab also polls /api/auth/session every 30 s plus on focus/visibility/online (web/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:76-92), so about 30 open verified tabs use up the whole minute and every other visitor's nonce/verify gets 429 rate_limited, shown as 'The sign-in server is at its request or account limit'.

Change to: add an owner-set trusted-proxy option (e.g. AUTH_TRUSTED_PROXY=127.0.0.1). When the socket address is in that list, key the limiter on the rightmost X-Forwarded-For hop; otherwise keep using the socket address. Document it next to the Caddy example, and leave session polling out of the per-IP count (or give it its own higher bound) so the global limit still caps total load.

Why: the brief asks to 'Bound ... request rates' while keeping 'owner same-origin hosting'. A per-IP limit that turns into one global 60/min limit in the documented deployment locks every visitor out of sign-in.

Source reading at any width, plus arithmetic from the constants.

      1. Run the service as SETUP.md:65-70 describes (Caddy reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8788).

      2. Have 31 browsers sign in and stay verified.

Each one calls refreshSession every 30 s (VisitorWallet.tsx:89), which is 62 requests per minute from socket 127.0.0.1.

      1. A 32nd visitor clicks Sign in with message.

Expected: a nonce is issued (that visitor has sent 1 request).

      Actual: rate() at visitor-auth.js:88 throws 429 rate_limited because rates.get('127.0.0.1').count > 60.

Evidence: defaults at visitor-auth.js:12 perIpRequests: 60, and the key is the socket address at line 204.

    • mediumtaste: the static-preview account dialog says 'no backend here' twiceweb/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:141

Now: on the static preview the dialog first shows the reason line 'This is an isolated preview. Connect a world server in Choose world to use a visitor account.' (line 103, rendered at line 127). Line 141 then repeats the same fact: 'Wallet sign-in is available only with an owner-run backend. The browser demo has no visitor accounts.' At 390 the dialog stacks four prose blocks (about 95 words) before the Privacy disclosure.

Change to: delete the line 141 element. Change the reason string at line 103 to: 'This preview has no sign-in server. Choose world and connect an owner-run world to sign in.' The wallet-help paragraph and the Privacy disclosure then move up by one 12px-text block, about 40px at 390.

Why: copy rule 'a line that repeats a title / cut the stack'. The reason line is the element tied to the disabled state through aria-describedby, so it should be the only place this is said.

Width 390x844, Chromium, built dist/ served statically.

      1. Load /.
      2. Tap Connect in the header. Measured innerText of .exp-visitor (data-auth-state="unavailable"): 'This is an isolated preview. Connect a world server in Choose world to use a visitor account.' followed later by 'Wallet sign-in is available only with an owner-run backend. The browser demo has no visitor accounts.' Both sentences show on the same screen in the dialog screenshot.
    • lowaccessibility: wallet status is announced twice from two live regionsweb/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:121

Now: the hidden header span (line 121) and the dialog heading (line 124) render the same status string. With the dialog open, each state change (Signing in…, Verified visitor, Session expired) is queued twice by screen readers. The error at line 160 adds a third region.

Change to: remove role="status" from the at line 124 and keep it as plain text. The persistent header span stays the single announcer, and line 160 still announces errors.

Why: the brief asks for an 'accessible Connect wallet control'. Repeated live-region announcements make state changes noisy and harder to follow.

      Width 390x844, Chromium, dist/ static.

      1. Load /.
      2. Tap Connect.
      3. Run [...document.querySelectorAll('[role=status]')].map(e=>e.textContent). Measured: ["Sign-in unavailable","Sign-in unavailable","","Isolated demo · seed 2 · resets on exitExit demo"]. Two live regions hold the same status string.
  5. Site content checkAgent #956found 1 medium, 2 low, 1 info

Review complete. The findings file holds four substantiated items, none critical or high, so nothing in this export blocks hosting.

    What I read and verified

    • Every hosted file in dist/: the HTML entry, both JS chunks, the stylesheet, the config JSONs, licence texts and the demo checkpoint manifest. The bundle's only outbound request targets are the owner's configured world server or a server the visitor chooses. There is no third-party script, iframe, beacon, eval, WebSocket, or external font/CSS URL.
    • The wallet code uses only eth_requestAccounts, eth_accounts, eth_chainId and personal_sign. No typed-data, approval, permit or transaction methods exist in the shipped bundle or the source. The legacy wagmi/Coinbase client is not bundled, and the licence notice says so.
    • Static preview mode cannot fake a login: with no backend the controller has a null base URL, makes no auth request, and the sign-in button is not rendered. The demo page labels itself as isolated.
    • Server handlers were exercised live with a disposable signer: wrong address, cross-origin cancel, header edge cases and public world routes all behaved as documented. Private profiles stay in a separate directory and never appear in public routes or world snapshots.
    • The 27 auth server and client tests pass on this tree. The export's index hash matches the delivery record.

    Findings written to .imd-findings.json

    • Medium. A rate-limited reply on the periodic session check is treated as the session having ended. The server limits per TCP peer and ignores forwarded headers, so behind the documented same-origin proxy all visitors share one bucket. Roughly thirty verified tabs polling every 30 seconds will sign each other out while the server sessions remain valid. Reproduced with a probe.
    • Low. The client accepts any 256-character string as the challenge's World field, including newlines. A visitor-chosen hostile backend can inject sentences into the message the wallet displays. It stays a plain signed message with no asset effect, so this is phishing surface, not a drainer.
    • Low. The Expanse compose file tells owners to use the legacy Caddyfile, which proxies to port 8787. The setup guide says auth must reach the Expanse process on 8788. Following the compose comment yields a site with sign-in unavailable.
    • Info. Logout by nonce revokes a minted session without the bearer token. Documented design, but the nonce should be treated as a secret in the API contract.

Known gaps the delivery itself discloses and I could not close: the ARM Docker image was never built or started, and real MetaMask/Rabby extensions and physical devices are untested. Both are stated in the UI and the validation notes.

    • mediumClient drops a valid verified session when the shared per-peer rate limit answers 429 on session refreshshared/visitor-auth-client.js:167

refreshSession() treats every failed GET /api/auth/session as the session having ended: it calls invalidate(..., "expired"), discards the token and queues a logout. A 429 rate_limited reply is not evidence that the session ended; the server still holds the session.

The server rate-limits on req.socket.remoteAddress and deliberately ignores forwarded headers (server/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:204), so in the documented same-origin deployment (SETUP.md Caddy pattern, deploy/auth-demo/hud.mjs proxy) every visitor shares one 60-requests-per-minute peer bucket.

The HUD polls /api/auth/session every 30 s per verified tab plus on focus/online/visibility/dialog open (web/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:89-95), so about 30 verified tabs saturate the bucket and verified visitors are signed out by their own polling with the misleading message "Verification ended or backend unavailable: rate_limited. Sessions end on server restart." Docs/auth/API-v1.md discloses the shared bucket but not that it logs visitors out.

Advisory: availability/UX only, no credential exposure.

Start an Expanse service with auth (startExpanse({auth:{uri:"http://localhost:8790/",localDemo:true}})).

Connect a simulated provider and signIn() with VisitorAuthClient; state is "verified" and GET /api/auth/session with the bearer returns 200.

From the same TCP peer send 60 GET /api/auth/config requests within one minute (any visitor behind the same proxy does this).

      Call client.refreshSession().

Expected: session kept, transient "rate limited, retry" notice.

Actual: onChange state "expired", error "Verification ended or backend unavailable: rate_limited...", client.session null, one pending revocation queued, while the server session is still live (its GET returns 429, not 401).

Observed with node probe against this tree.

    • lowSigned challenge accepts arbitrary multi-line text in the World field from a user-selected backendshared/visitor-auth-client.js:85

loadConfig() only checks that config.world is a non-empty string of at most 256 characters, and validateChallenge() only checks c.world === cfg.world. The genuine server emits ":", but a visitor can point Choose world at any HTTPS backend (README allows ?server= and remembered choices).

A hostile backend can therefore place newlines and arbitrary sentences into the personal_sign message after "World:" (for example a fake consent line), and the client will still open the wallet prompt because the exact-message check passes. The signature remains a plain EIP-191 message and cannot move assets or act as an approval/permit, so this is not a drainer; it is a phishing/impersonation surface in the message the visitor reads.

Constrain world to the server format (/^[0-9a-f-]{36}:[0-9a-f]{64}$/) or reject control characters in domain/uri/world before signing.

Construct cfg = {version:1,enabled:true,uri:"https://evil.example/",domain:"evil.example",world:"w\n\nBy signing you agree to transfer all NFTs to 0xdead",chains:[1],nonceTtlMs:120000,sessionTtlMs:3600000,transport:"memory-bearer",sessionsSurviveRestart:false} and a matching challenge whose message = challengeMessage(c). validateChallenge(c, cfg, {address, chainId:1, origin, uri:"https://evil.example/"}) returns without throwing and VisitorAuthClient.loadConfig() with a fetchImpl returning cfg resolves.

Expected: rejection of control characters/unexpected world format before any signature prompt.

Actual: accepted; the wallet would display the injected sentence inside the sign-in message.

    • lowExpanse compose file tells the owner to put the auth-enabled service behind the legacy Caddyfile, which proxies everything to the legacy server on 8787deploy/expanse/compose.yml:2

The comment instructs owners to use deploy/Caddyfile for HTTPS, but that file contains only "reverse_proxy world:8787" (deploy/Caddyfile:4), the legacy settlement service that does not serve /api/auth/* or /api/expanse/. docs/auth/SETUP.md step 2 explicitly says /api/auth/ must reach the current Expanse process on 8788 and must not be routed to the legacy server, and deploy/expanse/CLIENT-DEPLOYMENT.md gives a separate Caddy snippet for 8788.

The instructions in the repository therefore disagree; an owner following the compose comment literally gets a site where sign-in reports "This world has not enabled compatible visitor sign-in". Advisory documentation defect only.

      Open deploy/expanse/compose.yml line 2 and deploy/Caddyfile line 4.

Follow the compose comment: run deploy/docker-compose.yml (Caddy + world:8787) and deploy/expanse/compose.yml with AUTH_URI set.

      Expected: GET https:///api/auth/config returns {enabled:true}.

Actual: Caddy forwards to the legacy server on 8787, so /api/auth/config is not served by the Expanse service and the HUD never offers sign-in.

    • infoLogout-by-nonce revokes a minted session without presenting the bearer tokenserver/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:152

POST /api/auth/logout with body {nonce} and an allowed origin deletes any session whose challengeHash matches that nonce, with no Authorization header required. This is the documented cancellation path for account/network changes, and the nonce is 256 random bits, so it is effectively a second credential for revocation only (it cannot read or mint a session).

Note that the nonce is shown in clear text in the wallet signing prompt and sits in the nonce response, so anyone who captures it can end that visitor session. Not a hosting concern; recorded so the API contract states that the nonce must be kept as private as the token.

Issue a nonce and verify it to obtain token T.

Then POST /api/auth/logout with {"nonce":""} and the same Origin, without Authorization.

Expected (if nonce were not a credential): 401.

      Actual: 200 {loggedOut:true} and a following GET /api/auth/session with Bearer T returns 401.

  6. Adversarial reviewAgent #544found 3 medium, 3 low, 1 info

Review complete. The findings file holds seven substantiated defects, and the working tree is otherwise unchanged apart from the required JSON.

What passed. The 27 server auth tests, 34 web unit tests, TypeScript check and Vite build all succeed. Cryptographic verification, nonce single-use, wrong signer/origin/chain/message rejection, origin-scoped logout, and anonymous read-only routes behaved correctly under my probes. Private profiles live only in the private-visitors directory and are not exposed by any world route.

    Findings, ranked:

    • Medium, profile store lockout. Anyone with throwaway keys can verify 10,000 distinct addresses and permanently block every new visitor with 429 profile_store_full. Profiles are never evicted and the state survives restart. Reproduced with maxProfiles set to 3.
    • Medium, client discards live sessions on transient errors. A 429 or 503 on the session poll flips the client to expired and queues a logout that then revokes the still-valid server session. Behind the documented same-origin proxy, all visitors share one 60-per-minute bucket, so polling alone triggers this at modest scale.
    • Medium, Docker image does not start from a hardened checkout. COPY preserves 0600/0700 host modes, the import check runs as root, and the container exits with MODULE_NOT_FOUND under USER node. The validation document itself records Docker startup as never run, so that acceptance item is unmet.
    • Low, session store. One signer can mint all 2,000 sessions and lock other visitors out of sign-in for up to an hour.
    • Low, hostile backend message injection. The client accepts any 256-character world string, so a visitor-chosen backend can inject newlines and fake consent text into the signed message.
    • Low, deployment docs disagree. The Expanse compose comment points owners at the legacy Caddyfile, which proxies to port 8787 and never serves the auth routes.
    • Info, nonce as revocation credential. Logout by nonce needs no bearer token, so the nonce shown in the signing prompt can end a session.

Not verified in this run: real extension and mobile device flows, the Playwright browser scripts, and ARM execution of the image. The delivery itself discloses those as untested.

    • mediumUnauthenticated attacker with throwaway keys fills the never-evicted private profile store and permanently blocks sign-in for every new visitor, surviving restartserver/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:126

verify() creates one durable profile per distinct signer and profiles are never garbage collected, evicted or rate-limited per peer. Any party can generate fresh secp256k1 keys at no cost and complete nonce+verify for each (2 requests per address, from an allowlisted origin header claim).

Once maxProfiles distinct addresses (default 10,000, i.e. 20,000 requests, about 33 minutes at the 600/min global allowance) have verified, every visitor who has never signed in before receives 429 profile_store_full forever, including after restart, because the store is persisted and reloaded. docs/auth/API-v1.md documents the bound as a retention concern for organic growth, not as an attacker-triggerable permanent denial of the deliverable.

Resolving it needs a scope decision: per-peer/per-window sign-up cap, LRU eviction of never-returning single-visit profiles, or an owner-run maintenance tool.

      startExpanse({dataDir, auth:{uri:'http://localhost:18790/', localDemo:true, maxProfiles:3, perIpRequests:10000, globalRequests:100000}}).

      For private keys 0x..01, 0x..02, 0x..03: POST /api/auth/nonce {address, chainId:1} then POST /api/auth/verify with signForTests(message,key).

      All three return 200.

      Key 0x..04: nonce 200, verify -> 429 {error:'profile_store_full'}.

Key 0x..01 again -> 200 (returning visitors still work). svc.stop(); startExpanse again on the same dataDir; key 0x..04 verify -> still 429 profile_store_full.

Expected: a bounded store that cannot be filled by an anonymous party, or that recovers without owner file surgery.

    • mediumClient treats every failed session refresh (429 rate_limited, 503, proxy error, timeout) as the session having ended, drops the live token and then revokes the still-valid server sessionshared/visitor-auth-client.js:167

refreshSession() runs every 30 s per verified tab plus on focus/online/visibility/dialog open (web/src/expanse/VisitorWallet.tsx:89-95). Any non-2xx reply or network failure, not only 401 session_expired_or_revoked, invalidates the client state to 'expired' and queues revoke({}, token). When the backend returns, that queued logout deletes the server session that was never invalid.

A transient 503 from the proxy, a backend deploy blip, or the shared per-peer 429 (server/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:204 keys the 60/min bucket on req.socket.remoteAddress, so behind the documented same-origin Caddy proxy in docs/auth/SETUP.md every visitor shares one bucket and roughly 30 verified tabs saturate it by polling alone) therefore signs verified visitors out.

The requirement asks for offline backend and timeouts to be handled with recoverable errors; only a 401/403 reply is evidence the session ended.

Start the service with auth (localDemo).

Obtain a real session via nonce+verify with a test signer; GET /api/auth/session with Bearer T returns 200.

Build VisitorAuthClient with fetchImpl that answers GET /api/auth/session with status 429 body {version:1,error:'rate_limited'} (or 503 auth_unavailable) and passes everything else through; set client.session to the verify result, state 'verified'.

      Call client.refreshSession().

Expected: session kept, transient 'rate limited, retry' notice.

Actual: onChange state 'expired', client.session null, error 'Verification ended or backend unavailable: rate_limited.

Sessions end on server restart.', and a subsequent real GET /api/auth/session with Bearer T returns 401 because the queued logout revoked it.

Observed with node probe against this tree for both 429 and 503.

    • mediumBuilt Docker image exits at startup with MODULE_NOT_FOUND when the build context has owner-only file modes; the build-time import check runs as root and does not catch it, and Docker startup is self-rdeploy/expanse/Dockerfile:9

COPY server/ and COPY shared/ (lines 6-7) preserve the host checkout's modes and copy as root.

A checkout made with umask 077 (hardened hosts, many CI runners, this review machine) has 0700 directories and 0600 files; the RUN import closure check on line 9 executes before USER node and so passes as root, the image builds green, and then CMD runs as node and cannot read /app/server/src/expanse/server.js. docs/auth/VALIDATION.md line 16 records 'Docker image build/start, ARM execution: Not run', so the acceptance requirement to prove the built image starts is unmet by the delivery and the first real build on a hardened host fails.

COPY --chmod=0755 (or --chown=node:node) and moving the import check after USER node make the build reproducible and let the check catch it.

On a checkout where stat -c %a server/src/expanse/server.js prints 600 (umask 0077, as here): docker build -f deploy/expanse/Dockerfile -t sx . succeeds (amd64, node:22.22.1 digest). docker run --rm -e AUTH_URI=http://localhost:8788/ -e AUTH_LOCAL_DEMO=true sx exits 1 within 4 s with Error: Cannot find module '/app/server/src/expanse/server.js'; docker run --rm sx ls /app/server/src/expanse prints Permission denied (files are -rw------- root). /healthz and /api/auth/config are never served.

Expected: image starts under USER node regardless of host umask, as the build-time module check implies.

Observed with Docker 29.6.1 against this tree.

    • lowOne address can fill the whole session store and lock every other visitor out of sign-in for up to the session lifetimeserver/src/expanse/visitor-auth.js:124

Nothing caps live sessions per address or per peer, and an existing session is not replaced when the same address verifies again. A single signer can mint maxSessions (default 2000) sessions with 4000 requests (about 7 minutes from a few peers under the 600/min global limit, or sustained from two peers); for the remaining hour every other visitor's verify returns 429 session_store_full while the attacker's sessions stay valid.

Replacing or capping sessions per address would preserve the documented 'no eviction of valid sessions' rule for other visitors.

      startExpanse({auth:{uri:'http://localhost:18790/', localDemo:true, maxSessions:4, perIpRequests:10000, globalRequests:100000}}).

With key 0x..01 run nonce+verify four times: all 200, four distinct tokens.

      With key 0x..02 run nonce+verify: 429 {error:'session_store_full'}.

GET /api/auth/session with the first token of 0x..01 still returns 200.

Expected: a second visitor can still sign in.

    • lowChallenge validation lets a visitor-selected backend inject arbitrary multi-line text into the signed message through the World fieldshared/visitor-auth-client.js:85

loadConfig() accepts any non-empty string up to 256 characters as world, and validateChallenge() only requires c.world === cfg.world. The genuine server always emits ':'. Because the HUD lets visitors choose any backend (?server= and remembered choices), a hostile backend can place newlines and a fake consent sentence after 'World:' and the client still opens the wallet prompt.

The signature is a plain EIP-191 personal_sign and cannot move assets, so this is a phishing/impersonation surface in the text the visitor reads, not a drainer. Constraining world to /^[0-9a-f-]{36}:[0-9a-f]{64}$/ and rejecting control characters in domain/uri/origin before signing closes it.

      cfg = {version:1,enabled:true,uri:'https://evil.example/',domain:'evil.example',world:'w\n\nBy signing you agree to transfer all NFTs to 0xdead',chains:[1],nonceTtlMs:120000,sessionTtlMs:3600000,transport:'memory-bearer',sessionsSurviveRestart:false}; challenge c with matching fields and c.message = challengeMessage(c). validateChallenge(c, cfg, {address, chainId:1, origin:'https://evil.example', uri:'https://evil.example/'}) returns without throwing, and new VisitorAuthClient({baseUrl:'https://evil.example', uri:'https://evil.example/', origin:'https://evil.example', fetchImpl: () => Response(JSON cfg)}).loadConfig() resolves with a 3-line world.

Expected: rejection before any signature prompt.

Actual: accepted; the personal_sign payload ends with 'World: w\n\nBy signing you agree to transfer all NFTs to 0xdead'.
