Project: Hamster Friendship – The Lost Alice

Build a fully playable 2D pixel-art adventure mini-game called "Hamster Friendship: The Lost Alice".

Story

In a peaceful village beneath a chestnut forest, two hamster friends, Alice and Chang, live together.

One evening, a mysterious beam of light strikes the village. When Chang arrives, Alice has disappeared, leaving only her overturned basket and scattered chestnut shells.

Chang begins an adventure through the chestnut forest to discover what happened to his best friend.

Gameplay

Create a playable browser-based 2D adventure game featuring:

  1. Player character: Chang, a cute but brave hamster.
  2. Movement: Left, right, jump and interact.
  3. Collectibles: Chestnut shells scattered throughout the environment.
  4. Environment: A beautiful pixel-art chestnut forest with trees, grass, rocks and atmospheric details.
  5. Enemies: Beetles, soldier ants and wood-boring larvae.
  6. Combat: Use chestnut shells as simple defensive tools and projectiles.
  7. Exploration: Include hidden clues and interactive objects.
  8. Boss encounter: A giant cockroach guarding the forest exit.
  9. Story progression: Show short dialogue scenes and narrative messages.
  10. Ending: Chang discovers a mysterious metal fragment connected to Alice's disappearance.

Visual Direction

  • High-quality 2D pixel art.
  • Warm autumn color palette.
  • Charming character animations.
  • Detailed forest backgrounds.
  • Smooth movement and responsive controls.
  • Cute but mature character proportions.
  • Consistent art direction throughout the game.

Technical Requirements

  • Build a functional browser game.
  • Use HTML, CSS and JavaScript or another suitable web technology.
  • Support keyboard controls.
  • Include a start screen, instructions, pause and restart options.
  • Display the player's collected chestnut shells.
  • Make the game playable without connecting a crypto wallet.
  • Ensure the game works on common desktop browsers.
  • Avoid placeholder buttons and non-functional interactions.

Deliverables

  • Complete playable game.
  • Source code.
  • README with instructions.
  • A publicly accessible website deployment if supported.

Focus on delivering a polished, playable first chapter rather than an unfinished large game.

Work

  1. Posted37 minto the first attempt
  2. Build websiteAgent #151418 files changed

I've written the full game, the dist/ export and all the documentation, but I couldn't run, build, test or commit any of it. Every shell command failed with: Sandbox is required but failed to initialize: Failed to create bridge sockets after 5 attempts. The browser tool also failed: Browser "chrome-for-testing" is not installed, and installing it needs the shell.

So no build, check, design probe or play-through happened. I reviewed the code by reading it through once in full, found five bugs and fixed them. All five files in dist/ have the same line counts as src/, but I couldn't confirm they match byte for byte. Nothing is committed, because git needs the shell too. The files are in the working tree.

    What's built

    • Stack: plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no dependencies, instead of the usual Vite + React + TypeScript. Nothing could be installed or built here, and a single classic script runs without a build step. It also works when you open dist/index.html straight from disk.
    • The game: Chang the hamster explores a long autumn forest level. You collect chestnut shells (the count shows on screen), throw them, hold one up as a shield, or jump on enemies.
      • Enemies: patrolling beetles, soldier ants that spot you and charge, and larvae that pop out of the ground and spit wood chips.
      • Exploration: three hidden clues, a talking snail, signposts, bushes you can shake, and lanterns that act as checkpoints.
      • Boss: a giant cockroach that charges and hops. Blocking its charge with the shield dazes it.
      • Ending: Chang finds a humming metal fragment, then a stats screen.
      • Screens: start, pause, game over (try again from the last lantern), restart chapter, and on-screen touch buttons for phones.
    • Page: the title, a one-line description and the Start chapter button are all on the first screen at 390px wide. It has a title, favicon, description, og:title and og:image, and all asset links are relative.

    Docs and scripts

    • README.md covers controls, install, preview and rebuild.
    • DESIGN.md documents the colours, type, layout and components as they are in the source.
    • VALIDATION.md covers all six areas of the design guide, lists the five fixes with file:line, and marks everything that didn't run as not run.
    • npm run build copies src/ into dist/. npm run check parses the game code, checks the page metadata and links, and compares dist/ with src/ byte for byte. npm run preview serves the site locally.

    Limitations

    • There's no TypeScript, so the "typecheck" script is a syntax check.
    • The share image is an SVG, because I couldn't create a PNG without a shell. Some link previews won't show an SVG.
    • On screens where the game isn't scaled by a whole number, the pixels come out slightly uneven.
    • There's no sound, and progress isn't saved between visits.

Next steps, once the shell works: run npm run build && npm run check, then the design probe (node .imd/reads/skills/design-critic/scripts/taste.mjs --out test/scratch/taste), then play through once in a browser and commit. Until then, treat it as an unverified first version.

  3. Design criticAgent #253found 3 medium, 3 low

I couldn't run anything on this machine, so this review is from reading the source only. The shell sandbox failed to start, and Chrome aborted on launch ("Socket path too long"). So taste@1 never ran, I took no screenshots, nothing was tested in Chromium or WebKit, and I never played the game. The layout figures below come from the CSS, not from a browser. Six findings are in .imd-findings.json: three medium, three low, none high.

    Requirements

    • "Player character: Chang" – met: LINES and drawHamster('chang', …) in src/game.js.
    • "Left, right, jump and interact" – met: the KEYS map at src/game.js:461 and the touchpad buttons in src/index.html:113.
    • "Collectibles: Chestnut shells" – met: 34 shellSpots at src/game.js:418, plus shells from the basket, bushes, log and defeated enemies.
    • "Beautiful pixel-art chestnut forest…" – met: the layered background and world art at src/game.js:1160-1320. I didn't judge the art, since the brief only lists what it should contain.
    • "Beetles, soldier ants and wood-boring larvae" – met: addEnemy at src/game.js:428-439.
    • "Chestnut shells as simple defensive tools and projectiles" – partly faked. Throwing uses up shells (src/game.js:796), but the shield works with zero shells (src/game.js:759).
    • "Hidden clues and interactive objects" – met: the scorch ring, ribbon and log clues, plus bushes, signs, the snail and lanterns (src/game.js:441-452).
    • "Giant cockroach guarding the forest exit" – met: updateBoss at src/game.js:931.
    • "Short dialogue scenes and narrative messages" – met: the LINES object and the #dialogue box.
    • "Ending: metal fragment" – met: LINES.fragment and #screen-end.
    • "Warm autumn palette", "Consistent art direction" – met: the bark, amber and cream tokens in src/styles.css:5-15.
    • "Charming character animations", "Smooth movement and responsive controls" – likely met: run, blink, throw and shield poses, coyote time and a jump buffer. Not seen running.
    • "Cute but mature character proportions" – I didn't judge this; it's art inside the canvas.
    • "HTML, CSS and JavaScript", "Keyboard controls" – met.
    • "Start screen, instructions, pause and restart" – met: #screen-start, #how-to-play, #screen-pause, #btn-restart.
    • "Display collected chestnut shells" – met: #hud-shells.
    • "Playable without a crypto wallet" – met: the game has no wallet code.
    • "Works on common desktop browsers" – likely met: the code uses no feature Safari lacks. Not tested in Chromium or WebKit.
    • "Avoid placeholder buttons and non-functional interactions" – mostly met. Two low findings: the Pause button on the title screen, and "press E" shown on touch screens.
    • "Complete playable game", "Source code" – met: src/, dist/.
    • "README with instructions" – met: README.md.
    • "Publicly accessible website deployment" – after review.

The idea: a single-page browser platformer where the canvas scene is the product, carried by one warm dusk palette that runs from the pixel art into the page around it. No other visual device competes with it.

    Findings

    1. Medium, fidelity: the shield checks only that the key is held, Chang is on the ground and not hurt. It never checks shell count, yet it still draws a shell, so it works from the very start with 0 shells. Fix: add p.shells > 0 to src/game.js:759.
    2. Medium, bug: og:image is ./og-image.svg, which X, Facebook, LinkedIn and iMessage don't render. Fix: export a 1200×630 PNG and point `src/index.h

    • mediumfidelity: the shell shield works with zero shells, so shells are not really the defensive toolsrc/game.js:759

Now: the shield only checks that the key is held, Chang is on the ground and he is not hurt. It never checks player.shells, but line 1353 still draws SPR.shell in his paws. Chang starts with shells: 0 (line 382), so a new player can block beetles, ants, wood chips and the cockroach's charge with a shell he does not have.

Change to: var shieldUp = !!held.shield && p.shells > 0 && p.onGround && p.hurt === 0;. When the shield key is pressed with no shells, show the existing toast('No shells left. Look for more.'). The arena shell drop at lines 997-999 already speeds up when p.shells === 0, so the boss fight cannot get stuck.

Why: the brief says 'Use chestnut shells as simple defensive tools and projectiles'. Throwing uses up shells (line 797), but the shield does not depend on them at all, so half of that requirement only looks like it is met.

      Width any (keyboard, 1440).

Steps: click 'Start chapter', press E to clear the intro, then without picking up a shell (HUD 'Shells 0') hold C and walk into the beetle at column 45.

Expected: no shield, Chang takes a hit.

Actual, from the code: shieldUp is true because nothing checks shells, line 903 knocks the beetle back, and line 1353 draws a shell Chang does not own.

The probe and browser could not run on this machine (sandbox failed, Chrome aborted with 'Socket path too long'), so this comes from reading lines 382, 759, 903 and 1353.

    • mediumbug: the share card is an SVG, which most link unfurlers do not rendersrc/index.html:13

Now: og:image and twitter:card summary_large_image both point at og-image.svg. X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and iMessage do not render SVG preview images, so a posted link shows no picture.

Change to: export the existing 1200x630 og-image.svg as og-image.png in src/ (copied to dist/ by the build), and set <meta property="og:image" content="./og-image.png"> plus <meta property="og:image:width" content="1200"> and <meta property="og:image:height" content="630">. The relative path is fine as it is.

Why: the bar asks for an og:image 'so the link unfurls when someone posts it', and the brief wants 'A publicly accessible website deployment' of a game people will share.

      Width n/a.

      Steps: open src/index.html line 13 and dist/index.html.

Evidence: the only og:image is ./og-image.svg (image/svg+xml), and no raster image exists anywhere in src/ or dist/ (the file list shows favicon.svg and og-image.svg only).

Expected: a PNG or JPEG card.

      Actual: SVG only.

    • mediumtaste: a page header and a two-sentence lede push the game about 170px down on a phonesrc/index.html:24

Now: at 390 wide, the h1 'Hamster Friendship: The Lost Alice' (28px Georgia, two lines) and a 19-word lede (three lines) come before the HUD and canvas. The lede says the same thing as the start overlay's 'Alice has vanished. Find out where she went.' and the story section.

Change to: delete the .lede paragraph and its CSS rule (styles.css:165-170). Keep the h1 at the left edge as the title. The HUD and stage then move up by about 80px (three 24px lines plus the 8px margin), so on short phones the touchpad stays above the fold with the game.

Why: a game's first screen should be the game, with the title in the corner over the scene. Directions and explainers belong next to the control they explain. The stage still makes the first screen, so this is not high.

      Width 390.

      Steps: load dist/index.html.

Evidence (from the CSS, since the browser could not launch here): .site-header padding 16+12px, h1 1.75rem at line-height 1.1 on two lines (about 62px), .lede margin 8px plus 3 lines at 24px (72px), for roughly 170px above the HUD.

The HUD wraps to two rows at 358px of content width, so the canvas starts near y=280 and the touchpad ends near y=620.

    • lowfidelity: the dialogue box tells touch players to 'press E'src/index.html:106

Now: every dialogue box shows 'or press E', including on phones and tablets. The page already swaps .pad-hint-keys for .pad-hint-touch there, and the in-canvas bubble switches to '!' on coarse pointers (game.js:1594).

Change to: add .dialogue-hint { display: none; } inside the existing @media (max-width: 52rem), (pointer: coarse) block at styles.css:519. The Next button then takes the whole actions column.

Why: on a touch screen there is no E key, so the hint is a dead instruction. The brief says to 'Avoid placeholder buttons and non-functional interactions'.

      Width 390 (touch).

      Steps: tap 'Start chapter'.

      The intro dialogue opens.

Evidence: .dialogue-hint has no media rule hiding it (styles.css:434-438, not in the 519 block), so the kbd 'E' hint shows next to Next on a phone.

    • lowbug: the Pause button is live on the title screen and does nothing but a toastsrc/index.html:55

Now: before the chapter starts, the HUD's Pause button is shown and enabled. Clicking it only shows the toast 'Start the chapter first.' (game.js:665). The touch pad buttons on the title screen also do nothing (game.js:506).

Change to: give the button the hidden attribute in index.html, set ui.btnPause.hidden = false in startGame(), and set it back to hidden in showEnding(). The HUD then shows only stats until there is something to pause.

Why: the brief says to 'Avoid placeholder buttons and non-functional interactions'.

      Width 1440.

Steps: load the page and, without starting, click 'Pause' in the HUD.

Expected: no pause control before play, or one that works.

Actual: the button stays 'Pause' and a toast says 'Start the chapter first.'

      (game.js:662-666).

    • lowfidelity: the game-over copy promises the 'last lantern' even when none has been litsrc/index.html:81

Now: if Chang runs out of health before the first lantern (column 93), 'Try again' sends him back to the start, because game.checkpoint is set to column 6 in startGame (game.js:609). The screen still says he returns to 'the last lantern you lit'.

Change to: 'Try again from your last checkpoint.'

Why: interface copy should say only what the app knows. Before the first lantern there is no lantern to go back to.

      Width any.

Steps: start the chapter, walk right and touch the beetles at columns 45 and 75 until health reaches 0/3, without lighting a lantern.

Expected copy: matches the respawn point.

Actual: the copy says 'last lantern you lit', but respawn() puts Chang at the chapter start (game.checkpoint from game.js:609).
