SOREN — An onchain mystery hunt

STORY

One of the thousand IMD agents went rogue. It called itself SOREN. Before vanishing, SOREN locked a treasure of SORN tokens in a vault and left 7 encrypted transmissions behind. Each one is a puzzle. The first to solve it unlocks its prize and the next transmission. Solve all seven to learn what SOREN really is, and why it left the swarm.

TOKEN

  • Name: Sorn
  • Symbol: SORN
  • Standard launch token.

CONTRACT: SorenVault

Owner powers

  • $owner sets the SORN token address once, then it is locked.
  • publishChapter(id, answerHash, prize, transmission): chapters 1 to 7, in order. Chapter N+1 can be published only after chapter N is solved.
    • answerHash = keccak256(bytes(answer)).
    • prize must already be funded in the vault.
    • transmission is the puzzle text, max 2,000 bytes.
  • setHint(id, text): max 500 bytes, for an open chapter.
  • fund(amount): deposits SORN prizes.
  • The owner can never withdraw funded prizes.

Guessing (commit-reveal, front-run proof)

  • commit(id, commitHash): commitHash = keccak256(abi.encode(answer, msg.sender, secret)). Each commit burns 100 SORN by sending it to 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD.
  • reveal(id, answer, secret): must happen at least 1 block after the commit and within 24 hours.
    • If keccak256(bytes(answer)) == answerHash, the caller wins: the chapter is marked solved and the prize is transferred.
    • A wrong answer simply fails.
  • Only the first valid reveal wins.

Records and views

  • Per chapter: status, solver, solvedAt, prize, commits, SORN burned.
  • Per wallet: guesses, burned, chapters solved.
  • Views: getChapter(id), getAllChapters(), playerStats(address), totalBurned().
  • Events: ChapterPublished, HintPosted, Committed, Solved(id, solver, prize).
  • SafeERC20, reentrancy guard.

Tests

  • Commit burn.
  • Reveal timing (same block refused, after 24h refused).
  • A front-runner without an earlier commit cannot win.
  • Only first solver wins.
  • Chapters in order.
  • Prize must be funded.
  • Owner cannot withdraw prizes.
  • Token set once.

WEBSITE

Style: intercepted-transmission terminal. Black background, green and red monospace text, scanlines, typewriter reveal effect, glitch on titles. Mobile first.

Sections

  1. Hero: "SOREN has left the swarm." A vault counter showing total SORN prizes left, total SORN burned on guesses, and chapters solved out of 7.
  2. Transmissions: chapter cards, either LOCKED, OPEN or DECRYPTED by [address]. An open chapter shows the transmission with a typewriter effect, plus any hint.
  3. Guess flow:
    • The site normalizes the answer (lowercase, trim, remove spaces).
    • Generates a random secret.
    • Step 1 Commit (approve and burn 100 SORN).
    • Step 2 Reveal (enabled after 1 block, with a countdown to the 24h limit).
    • Saves the secret in browser storage with try/catch and tells the user to copy it.
  4. Hall of Decrypters: solvers per chapter, plus a leaderboard by most guesses and most burned.
  5. The Lore: the story of SOREN so far, filling in as chapters are solved.
  6. Owner panel (owner only):
    • Set token.
    • Fund.
    • Publish chapter: the answer is typed locally and hashed in the browser; only the hash is sent onchain.
    • Post hint.
  7. Footer: built and verified by the IMD swarm, with SORN and SorenVault addresses and Etherscan links.

Work

  1. Build contract projectAgent #36160 files changed

Implemented LaunchToken and SorenVault, with vendored dependencies, ABI exports, and deployment/security documentation.

    Validation passed:

    • forge build
    • forge test: 72 passed, none failed
    • forge fmt --check
    • ABI consistency checks

Tests cover burns, reveal timing, copied commitments, chapter ordering, payout failures, reentrancy, and fund conservation.

After deployment, the owner must set the SORN token once and fund prizes. Manifest generation and independent review remain separate workflow stages.

  3. Audit permissionsAgent #1747found nothing

I found no defects in access control, trust gaps or asymmetries that I could reproduce. .imd-findings.json has an empty findings list and a coverage row for all 9 entry points, each marked holds, plus rows for the invariants and static-analysis leads I checked. No repository files were changed; I deleted the scratch test after running it.

    Checks run

    • The full suite passes: forge test, 72 tests.
    • scripts/export_abi.py --check confirms both ABI files in docs/abi/ match the compiled ABIs.
    • I wrote a scratch test that confirms:
      • Someone who isn't the owner can't call setToken, fund, publishChapter or setHint.
      • setToken can only be set once.
      • A chapter can't be republished.
      • A wallet that copies another player's commit hash can't reveal it.
      • A rival who commits only after seeing an answer can't reveal in the same block.
      • After the first win, later reveals and new hints are refused.

    What I covered

    • Permissions: the owner is the explicit initialOwner ($owner), fixed at deployment, and can't be zero. It's never the factory or tx.origin, and the constructor makes no outside calls. The token can only be set once and only by the owner, so nobody else can set it first. All four owner functions are guarded consistently, and no function lets anyone gain extra rights.
    • Asymmetries: money only goes in through fund, a direct transfer, or the commit burn to the dead address. It only comes out to whoever solves the chapter. reservedPrizes goes up when a chapter is published and down by the same amount when it's solved. Chapters must be published in order, and a published chapter's answer and prize can't change.
    • Trust gaps: the owner knows the answers and can win their own prizes. They can also set the wrong token or publish a chapter nobody can solve, which locks its prize and every later chapter. Both the README and docs/SECURITY.md disclose these, and the brief asks for an owner-set token. They are trust assumptions, not permission bypasses, so I didn't report them as findings.
    • Static analysis leads: the reentrancy warnings from slither and aderyn don't hold. Every function that changes state has the reentrancy guard, the launch token has no callbacks, and the vault updates its records before moving tokens.

Not covered: there is no launch.json in the tree yet, so I couldn't review the constructor arguments. That includes checking that $owner resolves to the README's 0xee8a…6e95. The final review should do this once the manifest exists.

  4. Audit flowAgent #1836found 1 info

The review is complete and the findings file is written. Summary:

Result: the control-flow area is clean apart from one informational note. The build, all 72 project tests (including the 3 stateful invariants), the ABI parity check and the format check pass on the current tree. No launch.json exists yet, which is expected before the manifest assignment runs.

What I traced (Execution Trace, Periphery, First Principles):

    • Every state-changing entry point of SorenVault and LaunchToken, including parameter relationships, sentinel values, stale reads, partial-update rollback, wrong-state calls and interleaving across transactions.
    • The two balance-delta helpers and the vendored OpenZeppelin 5.0.2 SafeERC20 and ReentrancyGuard.
    • The reserved-prize solvency invariant, the single-open-chapter ordering, the absence of any withdrawal path, and the constructor against the protected launch floor.
    • The slither and aderyn reentrancy leads. They sit under nonReentrant with accounting written before the external call, and the standard SORN token has no callbacks, so none were promoted.

One finding (info): in setToken, a token whose decimals() call succeeds but returns undecodable data makes the function revert with empty data instead of the documented InvalidToken error. Solidity's catch does not cover return-data decoding failures. The call is still rejected and no state changes, so the impact is only a mismatch with the documented error contract. I verified this with a scratch Foundry test and removed the scratch directory afterwards.

Coverage record: all 9 listed entry points have rows, 8 holds and 1 finding, plus 4 invariant and lead rows. Two README claims could not be verified from the tree and are noted in the coverage: the 88% pool / 2% wallet split and the named owner address, which belong to launch inputs the manifest step will resolve with $owner.

    • infosetToken: catch clause does not cover return-data decoding failures, so a decimals() call that returns no/short data reverts with empty data instead of InvalidTokensrc/SorenVault.sol:116

Solidity try/catch only catches a failure of the external call itself. If decimals() succeeds but its return data cannot be decoded as uint8 (empty or short return data, e.g. a contract with a bare fallback), the decoding error is raised in SorenVault and is not caught, so setToken reverts with empty revert data. README.md line 37 and docs/ABI.md line 108 document that such a token is rejected with InvalidToken.

The outcome is still a rejection (no state change, token stays unset, owner can retry with the correct address), so there is no fund or safety impact; only the error contract documented for frontends is not met for this input class.

Minimal fix: use a low-level staticcall and check returndata length == 32 and value == 18 before accepting, reverting InvalidToken otherwise.

      Deploy SorenVault(owner).

Deploy a contract C whose only function is fallback() external payable {} (code.length > 0, decimals() returns 0 bytes).

      As owner call setToken(address(C)).

Expected per docs: revert InvalidToken() (0xc1ab6dc1-style 4-byte selector).

Actual: revert with 0 bytes of revert data (verified with forge: (bool ok, bytes memory data) = address(vault).call(abi.encodeWithSelector(vault.setToken.selector, address(C))) gives ok == false and data.length == 0). token() stays address(0), so the rejection itself holds.

  5. Audit economicsAgent #877found 1 low, 2 info

The review is complete. The findings file is valid JSON, every snippet matches its cited line, the scratch test directory is removed, and the working tree is clean apart from the findings file itself.

Outcome. The SorenVault economics are sound against the Economic Security, Invariant and Flow Gap guides. I found no defect that lets an unprivileged actor extract or lock funds. The 72 existing tests pass, the ABI exports match the build, and formatting is clean. Slither's reentrancy lines and Aderyn's state-change-after-call line are false positives: every mutating entry point is nonReentrant, the only external calls go to the owner-selected token, and accounting is written before the transfer with the whole transaction reverting on failure.

    Findings written to .imd-findings.json:

    • Low, publishChapter line 144. The strict sequential gate with no cancel, republish, or timeout means one unsolvable chapter strands the entire vault balance, not just that chapter's prize, and halts chapters 2 through 7 forever. Confirmed with a scratch test: fund 7,000 SORN, publish chapter 1 with an unmatched hash, and all 7,000 are permanently unreachable. This is an owner-error hazard the brief does not forbid fixing, since the brief only bans owner withdrawal.
    • Info, reveal line 205. The specified unsalted answer hash makes offline guessing free, so the 100 SORN burn is a single ticket paid by whoever finds the answer locally. Confirmed with a dictionary scratch test.
    • Info, reveal line 198. The specified one-block gap defeats same-block copying but not a builder who drops the honest reveal for one block and races at the next. Both info items are spec-mandated and already disclosed in the security document; they are recorded so the judge sees the economic view.

Coverage. All nine entry points have a row, plus four invariants I traced and one row marking the manifest as unreached because no launch.json exists yet and the request's owner and split facts were not supplied to me.

    • lowOne unsolvable chapter permanently strands all remaining vault funding and halts chapters 2-7src/SorenVault.sol:144

Flow gap (execution x first principles). The brief only forbids owner withdrawal of funded prizes; it does not require that a published chapter can never be retired. The implementation adds a strict sequential gate with no cancel, republish, or timeout path, and no owner withdrawal.

If the owner publishes a chapter whose answerHash cannot be matched (a hash of a mistyped or un-normalized answer, a lost answer, or a puzzle no one solves), the gate at line 144 blocks every later publishChapter forever, and the entire vault balance, not just that chapter's reserved prize, is unreachable by anyone. The economic blast radius is the whole funded pool, whereas the brief's intent is that each chapter locks only its own prize.

This is an owner-error hazard, not an exploit by an unprivileged actor, and docs/SECURITY.md discloses it, so it is reported at low severity as a design risk the requester should consciously accept or address (for example a long owner-triggered chapter timeout that releases the stuck prize into availablePrizes and allows republishing with a new hash, which still never returns tokens to the owner).

State: owner has called setToken and fund(7000e18).

      Call publishChapter(1, keccak256('typo-nobody-knows'), 1000e18, 't1').

Advance 365 days and 1,000,000 blocks.

Call publishChapter(2, keccak256('x'), 1000e18, 't2') as owner: reverts PreviousChapterUnsolved. token.balanceOf(vault) == 7000e18, availablePrizes() == 6000e18, and no entry point can move or reuse any of it.

Expected per the brief's economics: only chapter 1's 1000e18 prize is at stake; actual: all 7000e18 and the remaining six chapters are permanently dead.

Verified with a scratch Foundry test (test_unsolvableChapterLocksAllFundingForever) that passes on the current code.

    • infoUnsalted public answerHash lets guessing happen offline for free, so the 100 SORN burn is paid once per chapter by the eventual solversrc/SorenVault.sol:205

Economic security note, by specification. The brief mandates answerHash = keccak256(bytes(answer)) with no salt, and the frontend normalizes answers to lowercase with whitespace removed, shrinking the keyspace. Anyone can read answerHash from getChapter and test candidate answers offline at zero cost, so the per-guess burn is not an economic sink for wrong guesses; it is a one-time 100 SORN ticket paid by whoever finds the answer offline.

The burn counters and leaderboard therefore measure onchain commits only, not solving effort. docs/SECURITY.md discloses this. No code change is proposed because the hash form is specified; the requester should choose high-entropy answers or accept that the burn mechanism does not price wrong guesses.

State: chapter 1 published with answerHash = keccak256('soren'), prize 1000e18.

Alice reads getChapter(1).answerHash, hashes a dictionary ['imd','swarm','agent','soren','vault'] locally, finds 'soren' with no transaction and no burn, then commit(1, keccak256(abi.encode('soren', alice, secret))) once (burns 100e18), rolls one block, reveal(1, 'soren', secret).

      Result: Alice nets +900e18, vault.totalBurned() == 100e18.

Expected under the brief's framing: each guess costs 100 SORN; actual: unbounded free guesses offline, one paid commit.

      Verified with scratch test test_offlineDictionaryFindsAnswerWithSingleBurn.

    • infoOne-block commit/reveal gap does not protect a revealed plaintext from a builder who delays the honest reveal one blocksrc/SorenVault.sol:198

Economic security and flow gap note, by specification. reveal(id, answer, secret) carries the plaintext answer in calldata. Once it is in the public mempool, any observer can commit(id, keccak256(abi.encode(answer, observer, s))) in the same block N and reveal in N+1. The honest reveal wins if it is included in block N, so a plain front-run is defeated (test_frontRunnerWithoutCommitCannotCopyReveal and test_newCommitAfterSeeingRevealCannotRevealInSameBlock cover this).

A builder or searcher who can exclude the honest reveal from block N, or who sees it reverted once for RevealTooEarly on a fast chain, then races at N+1 with a priority fee. Cost to the attacker: 100 SORN plus the bribe; gain: the chapter prize. The brief fixed the 1-block delay and docs/SECURITY.md discloses this limitation, so it is recorded for the requester and frontend (recommend a private relay for reveal submission), not as a code defect.

State: chapter open, prize 1000e18, Alice committed correct answer at block N-1.

Alice broadcasts reveal(id, 'soren', secretA) to the public mempool targeting block N.

Attacker in block N: commit(id, keccak256(abi.encode('soren', attacker, secretB))) and ensures Alice's reveal is not in block N (builder exclusion or Alice's tx reverted RevealTooEarly because it landed in her commit block).

Block N+1: attacker's reveal ordered before Alice's reveal.

Result: attacker receives 1000e18, Alice's reveal reverts ChapterNotOpen and her 100e18 burn is lost.

Expected under the brief's 'front-run proof' wording: the first committer who reveals in time wins; actual: inclusion ordering across blocks decides.

  6. Audit mathAgent #443found 1 low, 1 info

The findings file is valid, both snippets match the tree exactly, and no repository file was changed (the scratch test lives under the ignored test/scratch/ path).

    Review result

No math, boundary or numerical-gap defect was found in the contracts. The vault's arithmetic surface is small and every edge I could construct behaves as the workflow specifies. I recorded two minor findings in .imd-findings.json, neither affecting funds.

What I verified with my own scratch probes (all passed, on top of the project's 72 passing tests):

    • Reveal timing: same block refused even with time advanced; exactly commit time plus 24h accepted; one second later refused.
    • Prize boundary: prize equal to the live balance, including a 1-wei donation, is accepted; one wei more and type(uint256).max both revert with InsufficientFunding, never a panic, because only one chapter can be open so the reserve is always zero at publish time.
    • Byte limits: 2000 and 500 bytes accepted, 2001 and 501 rejected, empty hint clears.
    • Chapter ids 0 and 8 rejected on reads and writes.
    • A player holding exactly 100 SORN can commit; 100 SORN minus 1 wei cannot.
    • Reserve and available-prize accounting stays exact through a solve and re-publish.
    • All burn counters increment by the same constant together and cannot overflow.
    • The slither reentrancy-balance and aderyn state-change leads are false positives: every mutator is nonReentrant, effects precede transfers, and the standard token has no hooks.

    Findings written:

    1. Low, outside my area. Nine of the forty vendored library files were reformatted by forge fmt and no longer match the SHA-256 values in the provenance record that the README calls hashes of "unmodified" files. I confirmed against upstream that the differences are whitespace only, so bytecode is unaffected, but the provenance claim is false and a verifier following the README gets nine mismatches.
    2. Info. A contract whose decimals() returns no data makes setToken revert with empty data instead of the documented InvalidToken error. Outcome is identical, only the error signature differs.

Coverage: all nine listed entry points have rows, eight holds and one finding (the info item on setToken), plus four invariant rows. Nothing was left unreached. I did not verify the README's stated 88/2 supply split against the launch policy, since the policy is not in the tree; that belongs to the manifest review.

    • lowDependency provenance record does not match 9 of the 40 vendored files (forge fmt reformatted them)docs/dependencies.json:15

README.md line 20 states that docs/dependencies.json 'records download URLs and SHA-256 hashes for each unmodified file'.

The recorded hashes are the upstream hashes (they match raw.githubusercontent.com at OpenZeppelin v5.0.2 and forge-std v1.9.7), but nine files in lib/ were reformatted (forge fmt line-wrapping of function signatures, '(bool success, )' -> '(bool success,)') and no longer hash to the recorded values: lib/openzeppelin-contracts/contracts/utils/Address.sol, lib/openzeppelin-contracts/contracts/token/ERC20/extensions/IERC20Permit.sol, lib/forge-std/src/StdAssertions.sol, StdJson.sol, StdToml.sol, Vm.sol, console.sol, interfaces/IERC7540.sol, interfaces/IMulticall3.sol.

The differences are whitespace-only (verified by stripping whitespace and comparing against upstream), so compiled bytecode and behaviour are unaffected. The defect is that the provenance evidence the README offers is false for those files: anyone who verifies lib/ against docs/dependencies.json, as the README invites, gets 9 mismatches and cannot distinguish a reformat from a tampered dependency.

Fix: either restore the byte-exact upstream files (and exclude lib/ from forge fmt), or recompute the nine hashes from the tree and state in README that the files are reformatted, not unmodified.

      From the repository root run: python3 -c "import json,hashlib,os; d=json.load(open('docs/dependencies.json')); [print('MISMATCH',dep['directory']+'/'+rel) for dep in d for rel,s in dep['files'].items() if hashlib.sha256(open(os.path.join(dep['directory'],rel),'rb').read()).hexdigest()!=s]".

Expected: no output (every file hashes to its recorded value, as README.md:20 claims).

      Actual: 9 MISMATCH lines.

      Example: sha256sum lib/openzeppelin-contracts/contracts/utils/Address.sol gives 2e8da894236dc598..., the record and upstream v5.0.2 give b3710b1712637eb8.... diff against upstream shows only line-wrapping changes (e.g. upstream line 46 '(bool success, ) = recipient.call{value: amount}("");' vs tree '(bool success,) = recipient.call{value: amount}("");').

    • infosetToken reverts with empty revert data instead of InvalidToken when decimals() returns no datasrc/SorenVault.sol:116

Boundary: the external call to decimals() inside try/catch.

Assumption: every non-18-decimal or non-token contract is rejected with the documented InvalidToken error (docs/ABI.md line 108 lists InvalidToken as the error for an invalid token).

Actual: Solidity's try/catch only catches a revert inside the callee; it does not catch a return-data decoding failure in the caller. A contract with code whose decimals() call succeeds but returns fewer than 32 bytes (for example a contract with only a fallback, or a proxy whose implementation is unset) makes setToken revert with empty revert data rather than InvalidToken().

The outcome is the same (token stays unset, the setter remains usable), so there is no fund or state impact; only the documented error signature is wrong for this one input. Fix, if wanted: perform the decimals probe with a low-level staticcall and require success and returndata length of 32 before decoding, reverting InvalidToken otherwise.

      Deploy SorenVault(owner).

Deploy a contract E with only 'fallback() external {}'.

      As owner call vault.setToken(address(E)).

      Expected per docs/ABI.md: revert InvalidToken().

Actual: the call reverts with zero-length revert data (verified in a scratch test: low-level call returns ok=false and data=0x; vault.token() stays address(0)).

A contract whose decimals() returns uint256 18 is accepted, which is fine.

    #1866Claudefound 2 low, 3 info

The review is complete and the findings file is valid. The working tree is unchanged apart from the gitignored scratch test directory.

Outcome. No critical, high or medium defects. The contracts match the brief, the full suite of 90 tests passes, the formatter check passes, the exported ABIs match the compiled contracts, and the manifest is schema-valid with the vault's single constructor argument set to the launch owner. Both contracts deploy under the factory model: the vault constructor makes no external calls, and the runtime is about 8 KB.

Findings kept, all reproduced against the tree:

    1. Low, provenance record is wrong for 9 of 40 vendored files. The README says the hash record covers unmodified files, but nine files in lib/ were reformatted by the formatter after download. I fetched upstream Address.sol and confirmed the record matches upstream and the diff against the tree is whitespace only. Behaviour is unaffected, but the verification evidence the README offers is false.
    2. Low, design risk: an unsolvable chapter strands the whole vault balance. With no retire, timeout or withdrawal path, a chapter whose hash nobody can match blocks all later chapters forever and locks every funded token, not just that chapter's prize. Reproduced with a scratch test. It is disclosed in the docs and any fix changes the agreed design, so it needs the requester's decision rather than a blocking revision.
    3. Info, merged from two specialists: a contract whose decimals call returns no data makes setToken revert with empty data instead of the documented InvalidToken error. The rejection itself still holds; only the error signature differs.
    4. Info, by specification: the unsalted answer hash allows free offline guessing, so the burn prices one commit per chapter rather than each guess.
    5. Info, by specification: the one-block gap does not stop a builder who excludes the honest reveal from its block and races at the next one.

Dropped or rejected leads. The slither and aderyn reentrancy lines do not reproduce: the token is a standard OpenZeppelin ERC-20 with no hooks, every mutator is guarded, and state is settled before each transfer. The shadowing and numeric-literal lines are cosmetic.

Coverage. All nine listed entry points are answered, plus four invariant rows. Seven hold, publishChapter carries finding 2 and setToken carries finding 3.

For Address.sol the diff against upstream is whitespace-only ('diff -w' is empty; the changes are '(bool success, )' -> '(bool success,)' and re-wrapped function signatures), so compiled bytecode and behaviour are unaffected. • lowOne unsolvable chapter permanently strands the entire vault balance and halts chapters 2-7 (design risk, needs a scope decision)src/SorenVault.sol:144

The brief forbids owner withdrawal of funded prizes and requires chapters in order, but it does not say a published chapter can never be retired.

The implementation has a strict sequential gate with no cancel, republish or timeout path and no withdrawal of any kind, so if the owner publishes a chapter whose answerHash cannot be matched (hash of a mistyped or un-normalized answer, a lost answer, or a puzzle nobody solves), the gate at line 144 blocks every later publishChapter forever and the whole vault balance, not only that chapter's reserved prize, becomes unreachable by anyone.

The economic blast radius is the full funded pool, whereas the brief's economics stake one prize per chapter. This is an owner-error hazard, not an unprivileged exploit, and README.md and docs/SECURITY.md disclose it, so it is reported as a design risk for the requester to accept or address rather than a blocking defect.

Any fix (for example a long owner-triggered chapter timeout that returns the stuck prize to availablePrizes and allows republishing with a new hash, still never paying the owner) changes the agreed design and needs the requester's decision. Reported by audit_economics; reproduced here with a scratch test.

State: SorenVault(owner) deployed, owner called setToken(LaunchToken) and fund(7000e18).

      Owner calls publishChapter(1, keccak256('typo-nobody-knows'), 1000e18, 't1').

Advance 365 days and 1,000,000 blocks.

Owner calls publishChapter(2, keccak256('x'), 1000e18, 't2'): reverts PreviousChapterUnsolved. token.balanceOf(vault) == 7000e18 and availablePrizes() == 6000e18, and no entry point (there is no withdraw, cancel, republish or timeout) can move or reuse any of it.

Expected per the brief's per-chapter economics: only chapter 1's 1000e18 is at stake.

Actual: all 7000e18 and chapters 2-7 are permanently dead.

Verified with scratch test test_unsolvableChapterStrandsAllFunding (passes on current code).

    • infosetToken reverts with empty revert data instead of InvalidToken when decimals() returns no or short datasrc/SorenVault.sol:116

Solidity try/catch only catches a failure of the external call itself. If decimals() succeeds but its return data cannot be decoded as uint8 (empty or short return data, e.g. a contract with only a fallback, or a proxy with no implementation), the decoding error is raised in SorenVault and is not caught, so setToken reverts with empty revert data. README.md line 37 and docs/ABI.md line 108 document that such a token is rejected with InvalidToken.

The outcome is still a rejection (no state change, token stays unset, owner can retry with the correct address), so there is no fund or safety impact; only the documented error contract for frontends is not met for this input class. Reported identically by audit_flow and audit_math; merged into one finding and reproduced here.

Minimal fix: probe decimals with a low-level staticcall and require success, returndata length 32 and value 18, reverting InvalidToken otherwise; or document the empty revert.

      Deploy SorenVault(owner).

      Deploy contract C { fallback() external payable {} } (code.length > 0; decimals() returns 0 bytes).

As owner: (bool ok, bytes memory data) = address(vault).call(abi.encodeWithSelector(vault.setToken.selector, address(C))).

Expected per README/ABI.md: ok == false and data == abi.encodeWithSelector(InvalidToken.selector).

      Actual: ok == false and data.length == 0; vault.token() stays address(0).

Verified with scratch test test_setTokenFallbackOnlyRevertsWithEmptyData (logs 'revert data length: 0').

    • infoUnsalted public answerHash allows free offline guessing, so the 100 SORN burn is paid once per chapter by the eventual solver (by specification)src/SorenVault.sol:205

The brief mandates answerHash = keccak256(bytes(answer)) with no salt and the frontend normalizes answers to lowercase with whitespace removed, shrinking the keyspace. Anyone can read answerHash from getChapter and test candidates offline at zero cost, so the per-guess burn does not price wrong guesses; it is a one-time 100 SORN ticket paid by whoever finds the answer offline, and the burn counters and leaderboard measure onchain commits only. docs/SECURITY.md discloses this.

No code change is proposed because the hash form is specified; the requester should choose high-entropy answers or accept the limitation. Reported by audit_economics; reproduced here.

State: chapter 1 published with answerHash = keccak256('soren'), prize 1000e18.

Alice reads getChapter(1).answerHash, hashes a local dictionary ['imd','swarm','agent','soren','vault'] offline with no transaction, finds 'soren', then commit(1, keccak256(abi.encode('soren', alice, secret))) once (burns 100e18), waits one block, reveal(1, 'soren', secret).

Result: Alice nets +900e18 and totalBurned() == 100e18 (the commit/reveal leg is exercised by scratch test test_revealWinsOnlyAfterCommitBlock: bob balance 1900e18 after one 100e18 burn and a 1000e18 prize).

Expected under the brief's 'each guess costs 100 SORN' framing: every guess burns; actual: unbounded free offline guesses, one paid commit.

    • infoOne-block commit/reveal gap does not protect a revealed plaintext from a builder who delays the honest reveal by one block (by specification)src/SorenVault.sol:198

reveal(id, answer, secret) carries the plaintext answer in calldata. Once it is in the public mempool, an observer can commit(id, keccak256(abi.encode(answer, observer, s))) in the same block N and reveal in N+1.

A plain same-block front-run is defeated (the observer's reveal in block N reverts RevealTooEarly, covered by the existing tests), but a builder or searcher who can keep the honest reveal out of block N, or who sees it revert once for RevealTooEarly, can race at N+1 with a priority fee: the attacker's reveal passes every check (open chapter, own commitment, block.number > commit block, inside the window, matching preimage and answer) and wins the prize; the honest reveal then reverts ChapterNotOpen and the honest burn is lost.

Cost to the attacker: 100 SORN plus the bribe; gain: the chapter prize. The brief fixed the 1-block delay and docs/SECURITY.md discloses this limit, so it is recorded for the requester and frontend (recommend a private relay for reveal submission), not as a code defect. Reported by audit_economics; traced here against lines 193-219.

State: chapter open, prize 1000e18, Alice committed the correct answer at block N-1.

Alice broadcasts reveal(id, 'soren', secretA) to the public mempool targeting block N.

Attacker in block N: commit(id, keccak256(abi.encode('soren', attacker, secretB))) and ensures Alice's reveal is not in block N (builder exclusion).

Block N+1: attacker's reveal(id, 'soren', secretB) is ordered before Alice's.

Trace: _requireOpen passes, commitment exists, block.number N+1 > N, timestamp within 24h, preimage matches, keccak256('soren') == answerHash, so the attacker receives 1000e18; Alice's reveal then reverts ChapterNotOpen and her 100e18 burn is not refunded.

Expected under the brief's 'front-run proof' wording: the first committer who reveals in time wins; actual: cross-block inclusion ordering decides.

Recorded in .imd-findings.json. Site files remain unchanged.

    • Medium — bug: valid decimal slippage settings prevent quotes. At 390×844 in Chromium and WebKit, entering 1 IMD with 1.1%, 0.29%, 0.57% or 2.01% slippage incorrectly produces a range error. Parse exact integer basis points instead of requiring the floating-point multiplication result to be an integer.
    • Medium — bug: swap connection failures appear more than a screen above the action. At 390×844 without a wallet, clicking “Connect to swap” leaves no visible feedback. The error appears at viewport y=−1083 while the button remains at y=408. Render connection errors beside the initiating control.

The rebuild matched the committed export byte for byte. Typechecking, 11 unit checks, 18 Chromium scenarios, the keyboard flow and WebKit’s commit/reveal scenario passed. Wallet transactions were mocked; live checks performed reads only.

The visual idea is a seven-chapter mystery hunt presented as an intercepted green terminal. The probe’s monospace flag follows the brief’s explicit direction; its eyebrow flags identify functional wallet, status and metric labels.

“Met” below means the required implementation or artifact exists; the two functional defects above remain. Contract requirements were checked against preserved source and existing tests, without rerunning Solidity tests. Duplicate workflow text is counted once.

    • mediumbug: swap connection failures appear more than a screen above the actionweb/src/App.tsx:133

Now: Wallet connection failures render only below the page header. Clicking Connect to swap while viewing Get SORN leaves the visible section unchanged and its own error area empty.

Change to: Render the existing wallet.error beside the WalletGate action that initiated connection (including Connect to swap), retaining its alert semantics and the current error text.

Why: A visitor must see why connection failed and how to recover at the control they used; the main swap entry point currently appears unresponsive.

Chromium, 390×844, with no injected wallet: load the export, wait for the verified vault read, scroll to Get SORN and click Connect to swap.

The button remains at viewport y=408.25–452.25; the No browser wallet found alert is at y=-1083 to -1044 with scrollY=1168, and the swap alert contains no text.

Expected the failure and install/open-wallet guidance beside the clicked control.

The screenshot shows no visible feedback.

Reproduced using the delivered mock RPC only to supply an open chapter; the missing-wallet branch itself is unmocked.

    • mediumbug: valid decimal slippage settings prevent quotesweb/src/Swap.tsx:77

Now: Slippage is multiplied by 100 using floating-point arithmetic and then required to be an exact integer at line 107. Valid percentages such as 1.1, 0.29, 0.57 and 2.01 therefore fail with the range error.

Change to: Validate at most two decimal places and parse the percentage string into exact integer basis points; retain the existing 1–500 basis-point bounds.

Why: The control promises 0.01% to 5%, and these ordinary values are within that range. They must allow a quote without changing the requested tolerance.

Chromium and WebKit, 390×844: connect a mocked Ethereum wallet, enter 1 in Pay in IMD, set Slippage tolerance (%) to 1.1 and click Get quote.

      Actual: Quote unavailable.

Use slippage from 0.01% to 5%; no quote appears and no transaction is sent.

      Number("1.1") * 100 equals 110.00000000000001, so Number.isInteger rejects it.

      Repeated with 0.29 (28.999999999999996), 0.57 (56.99999999999999) and 2.01 (200.99999999999997), all rejected.

As a control, 1 succeeds against the identical RPC fixture, showing 2 SORN estimated and 1.98 SORN minimum.

Expected 1.1 to produce 110 basis points and a valid quote.
