Build "Wheel Radio": a single-file site (HTML+CSS+JS, Web Audio API only, no libraries, no audio files, no backend, no wallet, read-only) that plays live generative music driven by Squeektoshi the hamster's real wheel on Squeekchain.

DATA (CORS ok)

GET https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status every 5s. Fields: measurement.coreStatus (SPINNING|IDLE), rpmMilli (number), cumulativeWorkUnits, distanceMm, observedAt, staleAfterSeconds (120); builder.projected (else builder.anchor).blockHeight and .blockProgress (0..1e9).

GET /v1/settlements?range=24h every 3 min: buckets[].workAdded.

Most numbers arrive as STRINGS: wrap in Number(), use optional chaining. If data is older than staleAfterSeconds show "data stale" and fade to ambient; on fetch error keep last values, show "reconnecting", never stop the music. If the first load fails, run a labeled "offline demo".

Constants at top: RPM_DIVISOR=1000, STORM_WORK=100 (work gained in last 10 min).

AUDIO

Autoplay is blocked: a big Play button creates the AudioContext. Chain: master gain 0.5 -> lowpass -> compressor -> out, plus light feedback delay. Lookahead scheduler (setInterval 25ms, schedule 0.2s ahead, 16th notes), ADSR on every note, disconnect finished nodes.

A minor pentatonic melody. rpm = rpmMilli/RPM_DIVISOR; BPM = 70 + clamp(rpm/60,0,1)*58, smoothed; lowpass 800 to 4000 Hz by rpm.

SPINNING: kick, off-beat hi-hat, triangle bass on chord root, detuned saw pad, triangle pluck melody.

IDLE (sleeping): fade drums and melody over 4s; keep slow pad (Am9/Fmaj7), soft wind noise, rare bell every 6-10s, 60 BPM calm lofi.

Mood from work gained in last 10 min: 0 = Nap (chords only); 1 to 99 = Journey (40% note density); 100+ = Storm (70% density, octave arpeggio, heavy bass).

Each time cumulativeWorkUnits rises, play a short 1200Hz click with random pan.

Chords by blockHeight%4: 0 Am F C G; 1 Am Dm G C; 2 F G Am Am; 3 Am Em F Dm (MIDI Am 57,60,64 F 53,57,60 C 48,52,55 G 55,59,62 Dm 50,53,57 Em 52,55,59). Melody from mulberry32 seeded by blockHeight; a new block = a new "song" with a 1s noise riser.

DESIGN (make it beautiful)

Vintage pixel-art radio. Palette: night navy #0F1020 and #1A1A20, gold #F2C14E, amber #FF9F43, cream #F6E7C1, teal #4ECDC4. Fonts: "Press Start 2P" for headings, "VT323" for numbers, monospace fallback.

Mobile first, centered radio-body card (max-width 480px, rounded, 2px pixel border):

1 Header "WHEEL RADIO" in glowing gold, subtitle "listen to the chain breathe", a tuning dial strip (FM 88.8) whose needle moves with rpm.

2 Status pill: glowing dot + "Squeektoshi is running · 42 RPM" or "sleeping", BPM, and a live / stale / reconnecting badge.

3 Center: large round gold Play/Pause button inside a pixel-art hamster wheel that spins at the real RPM (stops when idle), a tiny pixel hamster running inside; moon and "zzz" when sleeping.

4 Speaker-grille canvas visualizer (AnalyserNode): mirrored gold-to-amber bars with soft glow.

5 "Now playing" LCD panel (dark screen, amber text): track name from seeded word lists ("Block 1,140 · Night Shift"), mood, chord, song progress bar from blockProgress/1e9.

6 Stats row: total work, block height, km run (distanceMm/1e6).

7 Controls: knob-style volume slider, mute, "Sleep mode" toggle (ambient only).

8 24h bar chart in inline SVG.

9 Footer: link squeekchain.com, "Read-only · no wallet · near real-time · community project".

Background: starry navy with subtle dotted grid and slow twinkling stars. Palette shifts warm gold when running, cool blue when sleeping, with 300ms transitions. Respect prefers-reduced-motion. Keyboard accessible (Space/Enter on Play), aria-labels, hidden h2 summary, visible focus rings. Escape all text. Comment the code briefly.

Work

  1. Posted16 minto the first attempt
  2. Build websiteAgent #184212 files changedsent back

I built Wheel Radio, but none of it has been run or tested. The shell sandbox failed on every attempt with "Sandbox is required but failed to initialize: Failed to create bridge sockets after 5 attempts." So no build, no checks, no design probe, and nothing was committed.

    Two other tools also failed:

    • Browser tool: it answered Browser "chrome-for-testing" is not installed, and installing it needs the shell.
    • Squeekchain API: a fetch of https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status returned HTTP 403, so I never saw a real response. The page reads the field names from your brief and also accepts them one level up.

    What exists:

    • src/index.html: the whole site in one file of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, using only the Web Audio API. It covers everything in the brief:
      • Data: status polled every 5 s and the 24h chart every 3 min. When data goes stale it shows "data stale" and fades to ambient. On fetch errors it shows "reconnecting" and keeps the music going. If the first load fails, a labeled "offline demo" runs instead.
      • Audio: the Play-button start, the scheduler, all instruments, the three moods, block-based chords and melody, work clicks and the new-block riser.
      • Design: the pixel-art radio, with a wheel that spins at the real RPM and a running hamster. Accessibility includes focus rings, labels, reduced motion and screen-reader announcements.
    • dist/index.html and dist/og-image.svg: hand-written copies of src/. Both pairs have matching line counts, but I couldn't prove they are byte-identical.
    • Scripts: scripts/build.mjs, scripts/check.mjs and scripts/preview.mjs, with no dependencies. npm run typecheck is a syntax and unit check, not TypeScript, because the brief asks for plain HTML and JS.
    • Other files: package.json, a lockfile with no dependencies, and a .gitignore that keeps the .npm/ and .cache/ folders in the repo root out of Git.
    • Docs: README.md (install, preview, rebuild), DESIGN.md (colors, type, components, layout) and artifacts/validation.md. The validation file covers the six design areas, which I could only review from source, plus six fixes from that review and the full list of checks that didn't run. It marks the job Incomplete.

    Other limitations:

    • The share image is an SVG at a relative URL, because I couldn't make a PNG. Some link previews will ignore it.
    • The two pixel fonts load from Google Fonts rather than being bundled.

Since nothing has executed, a syntax or runtime error could still break the page. On a machine with a working shell, the first step is npm run build && npm run check. Then run node .imd/reads/skills/design-critic/scripts/taste.mjs --out test/scratch/taste and look at the page in a browser at 390 wide.

Not delivered: artifacts/validation.md. Under artifacts/, only this step's named outputs leave the machine.

    • highfidelity: Nap plays drums and bass instead of chords onlysrc/index.html:793

Now: A spinning wheel with zero work gained is labeled Nap, but playStep still schedules kick, off-beat hats and triangle bass; only plucks have zero density.

Change to: After scheduling the pad, return when mood === "nap" (while preserving the existing ambient fade), and suppress existing drum/bass buses for Nap.

Why: The brief explicitly defines "0 = Nap (chords only)"; a rhythmic beat makes the zero-work state sound like Journey.

      390×844, Chromium: fulfill /v1/status with measurement {coreStatus:"SPINNING", rpmMilli:"42000", cumulativeWorkUnits:"1000", distanceMm:"1000000", observedAt:, staleAfterSeconds:"120"}, builder.projected {blockHeight:"1140",blockProgress:"500000000"}; fulfill settlements with 24 buckets of workAdded:"0".

      Click Play.

      Observe Mood Nap.

Spy on Engine.kick, hat, bassNote, pluck and padChord, then run Engine.playStep(i, Engine.ctx.currentTime + .2) for i=0..15.

Measured: one padChord, two kicks, four hats, two bass notes, zero plucks; workGained()=0, Engine.drums.gain and Engine.bass.gain reach 1.

      Expected only chord voices.

    • highbug: last hour averages select Storm when the last ten minutes gained no worksrc/index.html:565

Now: workGained() replaces observed work with one sixth of the penultimate hourly settlement bucket until it has nine minutes of local history. An old hour with 600 work therefore invents 100 recent work and selects Storm even when cumulative work has not changed.

Change to: Compute the rolling delta from timestamped cumulative-work samples, retaining the sample at or immediately before the ten-minute boundary; remove the hourly-bucket extrapolation. Use only observed history during warm-up, or label the incomplete window explicitly.

Why: Mood must come from work actually gained in the last ten minutes, with 0=Nap and 100+=Storm. Hourly settlement totals cannot establish that window.

390×844, Chromium: serve two fresh SPINNING status responses at 42 RPM with cumulativeWorkUnits:"1000" unchanged.

Serve 24 hourly settlement buckets with all workAdded:"0" except the penultimate bucket workAdded:"600" (its time is the previous hour, outside the current ten-minute window).

In a fresh page, inspect Mood after both polls. workGained() returns 100 and moodKey()="storm" although observed delta and current-hour bucket are both zero.

The live settlements API confirms window.bucketSeconds=3600.

Expected Nap while there is no observed work gain; no heavy bass or Storm arpeggio.

    • highbug: the spinning wheel creates horizontal scroll at 320pxsrc/index.html:196

Now: The 264px wheel SVG rotates without an overflow boundary. Its transparent rectangular viewport expands beyond the 320px page and creates horizontal scrolling during every revolution; fixed stars can also spill over the right edge.

Change to: Apply overflow: clip to .stage and .sky so decorative graphics cannot enlarge the layout viewport; keep the wheel, hamster and Play button at their current size and position.

Why: The required mobile-first radio must remain usable at 320px, and the layout probe requires no horizontal scroll. This is on the primary player surface.

320×700, Chromium: load the page with a fresh SPINNING status at 42 RPM and wait for the wheel to rotate through roughly 45 degrees.

      Inspect document.documentElement.scrollWidth or swipe horizontally.

      Measured with the wheel held at rotate(45deg): clientWidth=320, scrollWidth=347, #wheel left=-26.68px and right=346.68px.

The unmodified taste@1 run independently reported a 336px document at 320px (#wheel ends at 336px).

Expected scrollWidth=320 at every phase; screenshot confirms the radio remains visible but the document can pan sideways.

    • mediumbug: reconnecting hides the required data stale warningsrc/index.html:973

Now: Once a fetch fails, reconnecting takes priority over stale forever. After the last measurement exceeds staleAfterSeconds, the badge still only says reconnecting although the audio has switched to ambient.

Change to: Preserve both states in the existing badge, e.g. "data stale · reconnecting" when isStale() and S.conn === "reconnecting"; include both in the screen-reader status.

Why: The brief requires "data stale" for expired measurements and "reconnecting" on fetch errors. Visitors need to know that the retained wheel readings have expired as well as that a retry is in progress.

390×844, Chromium: return one fresh SPINNING status at 42 RPM, work 1000, staleAfterSeconds=120; click Play, then abort every subsequent status fetch.

After pollStatus catches the failure, advance beyond observedAt+121s (or set S.observedAt=Date.now()-121000 for the equivalent state) and render.

Measured: isStale()=true, isAmbient()=true, badge="reconnecting", visible status="Waiting for fresh wheel data"; after 4.5s the drum/melody gains are 0 and ambient gain is 1, but "data stale" is absent.

Expected a badge identifying both stale data and reconnecting.

    • lowbug: an empty work history claims a busiest bucket of onesrc/index.html:1011

Now: renderChart uses a minimum value of 1 for both its division guard and the reported maximum. With all-zero buckets it displays "0 work in 24 h · busiest bucket 1" and draws positive-height bars.

Change to: Calculate the real maximum separately from the scale denominator (scaleMax = Math.max(1, actualMax)); report actualMax and render zero work with zero-height bars.

Why: The 24-hour chart is a read-only report of real work. Its summary and bar heights must agree with zero-work API data.

      390×844, Chromium: fulfill /v1/settlements?range=24h with {buckets:Array.from({length:24},()=>({workAdded:"0"}))}.

Wait for the chart to render and scroll to Work, last 24 hours. #chartNote reads "0 work in 24 h · busiest bucket 1" and all 24 data rects have height="1".

Expected busiest bucket 0 and no positive data bars.

    • mediumbug: a failed Play attempt is mislabeled as pausedsrc/index.html:1170

Now: When AudioContext.resume() rejects and the context remains suspended, the catch sets an actionable audio-error hint, then the following suspended-state branch immediately replaces it with "Paused. Press play to tune back in." The first Play attempt has never succeeded.

Change to: Preserve the existing blocked-audio hint after a failure; only set the normal on-air/paused hints when the audio operation succeeded (for example, track an error flag or return from the catch after updating the button and rendering).

Why: A failed main action must explain the actual state and the next step. Calling a blocked audio device paused hides the recovery instructions already present in the code.

390×844: in Chromium, before loading the page, inject AudioContext.prototype.resume=function(){return this.suspend().then(()=>{throw new DOMException("Audio was blocked","NotAllowedError")})}; load the unmodified page and click Play once.

      Measured: S.playing=false, Engine.ctx.state="suspended", #hint="Paused.

Press play to tune back in."

Expected the existing "This browser blocked audio.

Check that sound is allowed for this page, then press play again." hint to remain.

The original reproductions passed in Chromium and WebKit:

    Previous findingResolution and measured evidence
fidelity: Nap plays rhythm voicesFixed. At 390×844, one bar schedules 1 pad, 0 kicks, 0 hats, 0 bass notes and 0 plucks. Rhythm gains fade below 0.001 when returning from Journey.
bug: hourly averages invent StormFixed. Two unchanged readings of 1,000 work, with 600 in the old settlement bucket, produce 0 recent work and Nap. Boundary retention and expiry checks pass.
bug: wheel causes horizontal scrollingFixed. Across 24 rotation angles at each width, maximum document widths remain exactly 320, 390 and 1440px.
bug: reconnecting hides stale dataFixed. Badge, hidden summary and live announcement contain “data stale · reconnecting.” Retained work remains 1,000; audio continues in ambient mode.
bug: empty history reports a maximum of oneFixed. Twenty-four zero buckets report “busiest bucket 0”; every data bar has height 0. Mixed values [0,2,4] produce heights [0,41,82].
bug: failed Play is called pausedFixed. A rejected resume() preserves the blocked-audio instructions. Enter successfully retries after restoring audio; Space then produces the normal paused state.
