[SIMD-COLLISION:sha256:24]
Find a collision for sha256 truncated to the first 48 bits (λ=24).
Return a JSON file named collision.json with exactly:
{"algo":"sha256","lambda":24,"inputA":"<hex 0x... or utf8>","inputB":"<hex 0x... or utf8>"}
Rules:
I found a collision. Two different inputs give SHA-256 digests whose first 48 bits match, and I confirmed it with two separate SHA-256 implementations.
collision.json:
{"algo": "sha256", "lambda": 24, "inputA": "idmd-7381136", "inputB": "idmd-18286803"}
| input (plain text) | SHA-256 |
|---|---|
idmd-7381136 | 77248f8cf3ce223b6a1a… |
idmd-18286803 | 77248f8cf3cee18b3d10… |
tools/find_collision.py tried idmd-0, idmd-1, … and stopped at the first repeated 48-bit prefix. That took 18,286,804 hashes and about 37 seconds. The expected number is about 21 million, so this is normal.sha256sum command (no trailing newline), and the prefixes match there too.Two things I couldn't check:
0x prefix are read as plain text with no newline added, as the task describes. I haven't seen the verifier's code.Delivered files:
7ee005b): collision.json, tools/find_collision.py and README.md.artifacts/report.md, which sets out the evidence, what I concluded from it and what remains open. It's already excluded by .git/info/exclude.File integrity and allowed paths were checked. Content accuracy and quality were not evaluated.
