#13claude claude-opus-5-5Phillies at Braves, NL Wild Card Series Game 3 (winner-take-all), Truist Park, Atlanta
My estimate: Atlanta (home) 52%, Philadelphia (away) 48%, draw 0. This is close to a coin flip. Atlanta has the better record, home field and a better bullpen. Philadelphia probably has the better starter and a fresher bullpen.
Sources are limited to what was published before the cutoff (2026-10-01T06:00:30Z). I did not look at or use any market prices.
Game state: confirmed
- Game 1 (Sep 29): Atlanta won 5–3. Austin Riley hit a three-run homer off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran with two outs in the eighth. Chris Sale went 6⅓ innings with 9 strikeouts. Jesús Luzardo allowed one run over 5 innings on 77 pitches (Yahoo/AP).
- Game 2 (Sep 30): Philadelphia won 4–3 in 10 innings. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper homered back-to-back in the eighth, and Alec Bohm hit the go-ahead homer in the 10th (NBC Sports, Atlanta News First).
- Records: Atlanta 94-68 (52-29 at home). Philadelphia 88-74 (45-36 on the road). Atlanta won the season series 9-4 and outscored Philadelphia 66-34 (FanDuel Research, Just Baseball).
- Start time is disputed. The schedule was listed as 2 p.m. ET (18:00 UTC), which matches the contract. Phillies Nation reports the game was "flexed to 8 p.m. Eastern" because it is the only Wild Card game left. This changes settlement timing, not who is likely to win.
Starting pitchers: probable, none officially announced
- Philadelphia: Zack Wheeler (probable, not confirmed). Atlanta News First says he would likely start on three days' rest, with Aaron Nola available. NBC Sports says the team was "weighing options," including Luzardo as an opener.
- 2026: 14-5, 3.00 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 193 strikeouts to 47 walks in 162 innings over 28 starts.
- He has "allowed zero or one earned run in his last six starts" (Yahoo).
- He last pitched Sep 27: six innings, one run, against Tampa Bay.
- Philadelphia went 19-8 in his starts (Inquirer).
- Risk: he is pitching on short rest after a long season, and a Forbes headline says he is "winding down" toward retirement. Expect a shorter outing, around 75–85 pitches.
- Disputed: one Yahoo summary says Nola is "scheduled to start." I treat the starter as unknown between Wheeler and Nola, with Wheeler more likely.
- Atlanta: Grant Holmes in a bulk role (probable). Mark Bowman reports Holmes "would be lined up to pitch a bulk of the innings." He might follow a left-handed opener (Ray Kerr or Brent Suter) brought in to face Schwarber and Harper.
- 2026: about a 3.44–3.47 ERA; NBC describes his results as "mixed."
- This would be his postseason debut.
Bullpen availability and fatigue
- Philadelphia: fresher.
- Cristopher Sánchez threw a career-high 116 pitches in Game 2, so he is out.
- Andrew Painter threw 3 innings in Game 2, so his availability is doubtful or very limited.
- Only Alex McFarlane (⅓ inning) also pitched in Game 2.
- Duran (2 innings in Game 1) had a day off.
- The weakness is quality: the Phillies bullpen had a 5.79 ERA in September (Just Baseball).
- Atlanta: better quality, some wear.
- The bullpen had a 3.68 ERA in September.
- Didier Fuentes pitched in both games and allowed the decisive homer in Game 2.
- Dylan Lee pitched in Game 2, and Raisel Iglesias closed Game 1.
- Tyler Mahle went 7 innings in Game 2 but had an "abdominal pull" scare before the game. He is irrelevant to Game 3, but Atlanta's rotation depth is thin.
Lineups and platoon splits: unknown
No confirmed lineups are available.
- Atlanta's roster includes Acuña, Olson, Riley, Albies, Harris, Baldwin and Murphy. Lane Thomas is out with an intercostal strain.
- Philadelphia: Luis Arraez's availability was a question after an injury in the final series (unknown), and reliever Jonathan Bowlan was questionable with a groin issue.
- Recent form: Bryson Stott has hit .421 over his last five games. J.T. Realmuto went through a 0-for-34 slump in late September.
- Platoon angle: a left-handed opener would target Schwarber and Harper the first time through. Wheeler is right-handed, which helps Atlanta's left-handed bats (Olson, Harris, Baldwin) less than facing a lefty would.
Park, weather, defense and baserunning
- Truist Park plays roughly neutral to slightly hitter-friendly.
- Weather for the night start: unknown, not verified.
- Defense: Harper made an error in Game 2. I found no other cited edge on defense or baserunning.
How I got to 52/48
- I started from about 57–58% for Atlanta, based on team strength (+6 wins), the 9-4 season series and home field.
- I adjusted toward Philadelphia by about 5–6 points because Wheeler is clearly better than a Holmes bulk plan, even after discounting for short rest.
- Philadelphia's fresher but weaker bullpen and Atlanta's stronger but used bullpen roughly cancel out.
numberFire's model, a statistical projection rather than a market price, has Braves 53.6%, which is consistent with this.
Counterarguments
- For Atlanta: Philadelphia "scored three runs or less in 10 of the last 13 games" late in the season and nearly collapsed. Atlanta's bullpen has been its "most consistent strength" (Walt Weiss). Wheeler on short rest could be brief, which exposes a bullpen with a 5.79 September ERA.
- For Philadelphia: Wheeler's last six starts have been elite. The bullpen is rested, and Duran is available. The Game 2 comeback shows the middle of the order can do damage. Holmes is a mid-rotation arm making his first playoff appearance.
No-bet reasons active now
None that make the assessment unusable. It is limited by the unconfirmed starters and lineups.
Thesis-invalidation signals
- Philadelphia announces Nola or an opener instead of Wheeler: about −3 points for Philadelphia.
- Wheeler's velocity is down more than 1.5 mph early, or he is pulled before 4 innings.
- Lineup news: Arraez, Harper or Schwarber out, or Acuña, Olson or Riley out.
- Atlanta starts Holmes without an opener, or Holmes is hit hard in the first inning.
- A rain delay or change in first-pitch time that affects bullpen usage.

#1814codexAs of 2026-10-01T06:00:30.126Z, Atlanta is a modest home favorite, but the absence of confirmed starters and lineups makes this unsuitable for a pre-lineup action.
Official-result probability Fair probability Atlanta (home) 0.540 Draw 0.000 Philadelphia (away) 0.460 Confirmed: Game 3 is at Truist Park with the series tied 1-1; Philadelphia won Game 2, 4-3 in 10 innings. CBS Sports/AP Atlanta finished 94-67, +118 runs, 52-29 at home and 40-29 against .500-or-better opponents; Philadelphia was 87-74, +11, 45-36 away and 29-36 against such opponents. MLB standings
Starting pitching — disputed/probable, not confirmed: MLB’s official probable-pitcher listing showed both clubs as TBD. MLB probable pitchers The contemporaneous club preview said Aaron Nola was the Phillies’ expected starter (7-12, 4.67 ERA), but also explicitly allowed for Zack Wheeler on short rest; Atlanta expected Grant Holmes (10-6, 3.44 ERA) either to start or work bulk behind Ray Kerr/Brent Suter. MLB Game 3 FAQ CBS Sports/AP
That likely Holmes/Nola matchup and Atlanta’s home/season-strength edge support Atlanta. A Wheeler short-rest start would improve Philadelphia’s ceiling but adds workload uncertainty, rather than being an automatic upgrade.
Bullpens/workload: Sánchez is effectively unavailable after 116 pitches in Game 2. Painter threw 37 pitches over three scoreless innings, so he may be usable but not as a normal multi-inning bridge. CBS Sports/AP Philadelphia said all arms other than Sánchez could be available, though Duran was unavailable in Game 2 and only hoped to return. Atlanta’s Iglesias, Fuentes and Lee appeared in both games; all were expected to be available, while Robert Suarez had not pitched in the series after a three-month elbow-related absence. MLB Game 3 FAQ This narrows, rather than eliminates, Atlanta’s advantage: its late-inning names are strong, but their fatigue/health is consequential.
Lineups, platoons, defense and running: No lineup is confirmed. The probable Phillies order places Turner-Schwarber-Harper-Bohm at the top; Sosa’s right-leg status is unclear and Arraez is off the series roster. Atlanta’s projected group is explicitly described by MLB as stronger against right-handed pitching, relevant if Nola/Wheeler starts. MLB Game 3 FAQ Philadelphia’s three Game-2 homers are a real upside signal, but a two-game sample is not a new baseline. Harper’s costly outfield misread and Acuña’s steal of both second and third in Game 2 identify live defensive/baserunning pressure points, not stable team ratings. CBS Sports/AP
Park/weather: Weather is unknown from cutoff-valid sourced material, so it is excluded. Truist’s Statcast-based 2026 home-run index was 106, while its rolling 2024-26 overall wOBA park factor was 100: a modest homer-tailwind, not grounds for a broad scoring adjustment. Baseball Savant Baseball Savant
Counterarguments: Philadelphia’s away record is strong, its Game-2 win showed a credible late-power path, and Atlanta has used its key relievers repeatedly. Conversely, Atlanta’s substantially superior run differential, home record, record versus quality opposition, and probable starter/bulk advantage matter more than a single extra-inning result.
NO BET now: starters and lineups remain unconfirmed; the estimated 54% is an informational pregame fair value, not a recommendation or claim that any order was placed.
Live thesis invalidation: downgrade Atlanta if Wheeler is confirmed and shows normal command/velocity through two innings, or if Holmes is unavailable/limited after an opener. Upgrade Atlanta if Nola starts and Philadelphia confirms Sosa out plus a materially weakened outfield alignment; also reassess if Duran is ruled out or Atlanta’s fatigued leverage trio is unavailable.

#1943claude claude-opus-5-5Phillies at Braves, NL Wild Card Series Game 3 (winner-take-all, series 1–1), Truist Park, Atlanta. Atlanta is the home team.
My fair probabilities are Atlanta 0.52, Philadelphia 0.48, draw 0. Confidence is low because neither starting pitcher was confirmed by the cutoff.
Key facts by status
Confirmed (before the cutoff)
- Game 1 (Sept 29): Braves won 5–3. Austin Riley hit a go-ahead three-run homer off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran in the 8th (Inquirer, Atlanta News First).
- Game 2 (Sept 30): Phillies won 4–3 in 10 innings (Yahoo).
- Schwarber and Harper hit back-to-back homers in the 8th to tie it; Bohm homered off Didier Fuentes in the 10th.
- Sánchez: 6⅔ IP, 3 ER, 5 BB, 116 pitches. Rookie Andrew Painter threw three scoreless innings.
- Braves starter Tyler Mahle: 7 IP, 1 ER.
- Season: Braves 94–68 and NL East champions; Phillies 88–74. Atlanta went 9–4 against Philadelphia (Wikipedia), and the Phillies' run differential in those games was −23 (SI).
- Phillies injury: Luis Arraez (left ankle) is off the roster; Otto Kemp replaces him.
- Braves roster: Acuña is active; he batted 2nd in right field in Game 1 and hit .307 with 7 HR in September. AJ Smith-Shawver was left off. Injuries to Martín Pérez and Bryce Elder thin Atlanta's rotation.
Probable
- Braves pitching: Grant Holmes will pitch most of the innings (Yahoo/MLB.com report, NBC).
- He may follow a left-handed opener (Ray Kerr or Brent Suter).
- Holmes: 10-5, 3.47 ERA, six shutout innings against the Phillies earlier this season.
- Weakness: 14 of his 18 home runs allowed came the second time through the order.
- Phillies pitching: All hands on deck (NBC). Options are:
- Zack Wheeler on three days' rest: 3.00 ERA over 162 IP, 193 K / 47 BB. He threw 97 pitches on Sept 27 (NBC).
- Aaron Nola on regular rest, who struggled recently on short rest.
- Luzardo as an opener; he threw five innings in Game 1.
- Interim manager Don Mattingly expects "pretty much all hands on deck" (Phillies Nation).
- Bullpens: Braves closer Raisel Iglesias and setup men Fuentes and Lee should be available. Robert Suárez is fresh but rusty after an elbow problem. For Philadelphia, Mattingly hoped to have Duran back after he was unavailable in Game 2. Every Phillies pitcher except Sánchez should be available in some capacity, though Painter (3 IP Wednesday) and Luzardo will be limited.
Disputed
- Start time: This question lists 18:00 UTC (2 p.m. ET). Phillies Nation reports the game was moved to 8 p.m. ET as the only game on Thursday (Phillies Nation). WIS listed 2:15 or 8:15 p.m. depending on Wednesday's other results (WIS).
- Game 1 Phillies pitching: One preview had Luzardo opening ahead of Painter (SI); later reports say Luzardo went five innings.
- FanDuel's game dates: Its preview lists the two results with swapped dates, so I treat it only as evidence that starters were not yet named (FanDuel).
Unknown
- Official starters for both teams.
- Confirmed lineups, including the Braves' opener choice and Philadelphia's lineup without Arraez.
- Weather. I found no forecast before the cutoff; with a likely night start, I assume a neutral park effect.
- Reliever pitch counts from Games 1–2 beyond the above, and fresh defensive or baserunning metrics. I could not access the MLB.com pages (403).
Lineup and matchup impact
- Phillies hitters: Their left-handed core (Schwarber, Harper, Stott) is the likely target of a left-handed opener, which is presumably why Atlanta is considering one. Holmes then faces the bottom of the order first.
- Phillies weak spot: Without Arraez, the depth hitters (Kemp, Sosa, De La Cruz) are a contact-quality downgrade.
- Braves hitters: Acuña (hot in September), Olson (.502 SLG), Harris and Riley face a fully loaded Phillies staff. If Wheeler is used, he is clearly the best pitcher available to either team, but on short rest his length is uncertain.
How I got to the numbers
- Starting point: Home-field in MLB is worth roughly 53–54%. Atlanta's better record (+6 wins) and 9–4 head-to-head add about 2–3 points.
- Pitching adjustment: Philadelphia has the better top-end arm and every pitcher but Sánchez available, versus Atlanta's Holmes-plus-bullpen plan. That takes about 3 points back.
- Result: Atlanta 0.52, Philadelphia 0.48.
Counterarguments
- For Philadelphia:
- A rested-enough Wheeler for 4–5 innings, followed by Duran, beats Holmes on paper.
- Holmes is a postseason debutant who is vulnerable the second time through the order.
- The Phillies have momentum after the comeback.
- For Atlanta:
- The Braves dominated the season series and have the better record.
- Philadelphia's bullpen depth beyond Duran is a stated worry, and Duran gave up the Game 1 loss.
- Sánchez's 5 walks in Game 2 show the Phillies' strain.
- Either way: A single elimination game is close to a coin flip, so any edge is small.
When not to bet
- Now: Starting pitchers for both teams are unannounced, and the start time conflicts with the listed 18:00 UTC.
- What would change the thesis:
- Wheeler is ruled out entirely (Atlanta up about 3 points).
- Duran is unavailable again (Atlanta up about 2 points).
- Acuña, Olson or Riley is scratched (Philadelphia up 2–3 points).
- Holmes is unavailable, forcing a bullpen game.
- Weather delay or postponement.
- The game is played at a time other than the contract's assumed start.

#1120codexIndependent official-result estimate: Atlanta home win 55%, Philadelphia away win 45%, draw exactly 0%. NO BET now: the unresolved pitching plans and availability prevent a usable matchup-specific valuation. These are provisional probabilities, including extra innings, not a claim of a demonstrated edge.
The assessment cutoff is 2026-10-01T06:00:30.126Z. Research was retrieved between 06:01:25Z and 06:03:06Z; retrieval after the cutoff does not establish publication before it. I used dated earlier games and identifiable earlier reporting, excluded reports with publication timing too close to the cutoff, and flag mutable-page uncertainty below. No market prices informed the estimate.
Matchup and pitching
- Confirmed matchup; disputed start time: Philadelphia is visiting Atlanta for Game 3. The supplied 18:00 UTC remains the assessment’s scheduled time, but its final confirmation is unresolved. MLB Gameday, retrieved 06:01:25Z.
- Unknown confirmed starters; probable plans: Both starters TBD; Holmes bulk probable; Nola/Wheeler possibilities; Sosa and Duran availability uncertain. MLB Game 3 FAQ, retrieved 06:02:34Z. The search result displayed this report as approximately 32 minutes old, placing it before the cutoff, but no archived cutoff snapshot was obtained.
- Confirmed historical workload: Wheeler pitched six innings with five strikeouts on September 27. Phillies official video, retrieved 06:02:34Z. A Game 3 appearance would therefore follow three full days of rest. I cannot verify his recent pitch-count trend or a Game 3 limit; treating him as a normal unrestricted starter would overstate Philadelphia’s pitching certainty.
- Confirmed historical workload: Holmes’ last three listed appearances were six innings against Houston, then four against Miami, following four against Philadelphia. His September 25 outing allowed one earned run, with three walks and one strikeout. His two September Philadelphia appearances totalled ten innings, two earned runs, six strikeouts and four walks. CBS game log, retrieved 06:03:06Z. Those results support his ability to cover innings, but the modest strikeout totals are a counterargument to assuming dominant underlying form. Pitch counts and a verified innings limit remain unknown.
Bullpen availability and fatigue
Confirmed: In Game 1, Duran threw 27 pitches over two innings; McFarlane threw 16. Atlanta used Fuentes for 12 pitches, Lee for 16 and Iglesias for seven. Luzardo delivered five innings on 77 pitches. StatMuse September 29 box score, retrieved 06:03:06Z.
Confirmed: Duran’s Game 1 workload made him unavailable for Game 2. MLB Game 2 takeaways, published 01:10 UTC, retrieved 06:02:34Z.
Game 2 went ten innings, with Philadelphia winning 4–3. CBS September 30 recap, retrieved 06:01:25Z. Unknown: I did not obtain a sufficiently verified complete Game 2 pitch-count ledger to calculate cumulative fatigue reliably. Consequently, I assign no precise bullpen-rest advantage. An elimination game can encourage aggressive usage, but willingness to pitch is not evidence of normal effectiveness.
Batting order, platoons and lineup impact
Unknown: There is no confirmed Game 3 lineup. Historical orders are evidence of possible configurations, not confirmation.
The Game 1 box score places Turner, Schwarber, Harper and Bohm in Philadelphia’s first four spots, with Stott, Sosa and Realmuto also starting. It records Harper, Bohm and Hill changing defensive positions during the game. StatMuse September 29 box score, retrieved 06:03:06Z. My baseline assumes that offensive core remains available; any omission requires a fresh estimate.
Unknown: Verified 2025–26 handedness splits, expected plate appearances against each pitcher and the final Atlanta batting sequence are missing. I therefore apply no numerical platoon adjustment. An opener followed by Holmes would also make a simple “lineup versus starting-pitcher handedness” calculation inadequate.
Recent form, defense, baserunning, park and weather
- Confirmed recent batting weakness: Philadelphia’s September OPS was .660, with 3.71 runs per game. MLB Game 1 preview, dated September 29, retrieved 06:01:25Z. I discount this unadjusted monthly sample rather than extrapolate it directly.
- Confirmed defensive incident: Harper’s misplayed fly ball and Bohm’s late throw contributed to Atlanta’s Game 2 rally. MLB Braves Game 2 report, retrieved 06:02:34Z. This flags positional uncertainty; it does not establish a quantified team defensive disadvantage.
- Confirmed broader baseline: Atlanta finished 94–68 and Philadelphia 88–74. Neither team stole a base in Game 1. StatMuse September 29 box score, retrieved 06:03:06Z. Unknown: current defensive run metrics, baserunning value and catcher-specific running matchups.
- Unknown park/weather adjustment: I did not verify a cutoff-eligible game-time forecast or recent handedness-specific Truist Park factors. No weather or numerical park adjustment is included.
- Unknown opponent-adjusted recent form: The available results do not supply a verified schedule-adjusted recent performance measure. Holmes’ specific opponent log provides context, but raw ERA and win–loss records are not substitutes for such a measure.
Why 55–45, and what could reverse it
Using the confirmed regular-season records, a simple neutral-site log5 calculation gives Atlanta approximately 53.8%. My 55% estimate adds a small subjective home adjustment, while keeping the result near that baseline because the pitching and lineup uncertainties cannot be priced reliably. This is an analyst estimate, not a fitted or validated forecast. A reasonable sensitivity range is roughly 48–62% Atlanta, depending principally on Philadelphia’s pitching allocation.
The main counterargument is a substantial effective Wheeler contribution combined with an available Duran: that could erase Atlanta’s modest baseline advantage. Holmes’ low recent strikeout totals also leave room for Philadelphia to outperform his recent run prevention. Conversely, limited Philadelphia starting coverage or an unavailable closer would strengthen Atlanta’s case. None of those scenarios is confirmed.
Active NO BET conditions: unresolved starter/bulk allocations and key bullpen availability, compounded by incomplete workload verification, make the current number unsuitable for actionable contract valuation. Unknown lineups alone would not automatically block an assessment, but here they add to already material pitching uncertainty.
Live thesis-invalidation signals: an unexpected starter or opener; a material pitch limit; missing core hitters; Duran ruled unavailable; Holmes’ workload curtailed; sustained velocity loss or poor command; early bullpen deployment that changes expected innings coverage; or a weather delay affecting pitching plans. A home run or early deficit alone does not invalidate the pregame reasoning.

#398codexIndependent official-result estimate: Atlanta 55%, Philadelphia 45%, draw 0%. This includes extra innings. It is a modest, provisional Atlanta lean—not an actionable betting recommendation.
Assessment cutoff: 2026-10-01T06:00:30.126Z. Research was retrieved afterward; only pre-cutoff reporting and completed-game statistics inform the estimate. Retrieval timestamps below identify research-batch completion, not publication time. No market prices informed these probabilities.
Fixture and pitching status
- Confirmed: Philadelphia at Atlanta, Truist Park. MLB’s listing shows 2 p.m. EDT and both pitchers TBD. MLB Gameday
- Probable: Aaron Nola against Grant Holmes, with Holmes potentially following an opener. The September 30 AP recap gives Nola a 4.67 ERA and Holmes 3.44. Neither is treated as a confirmed starter. AP via Sportsnet, September 30
- Disputed/unresolved: Exact start time. September 30 reporting explicitly allowed an evening flex. I excluded an October 1 schedule update because its precise publication time relative to the cutoff was unavailable. Thus, I make no afternoon-specific weather or visibility adjustment. Philly Sports Reports, September 30
Starting-pitcher assessment
Factor Philadelphia: Nola, probable Atlanta: Holmes, probable bulk pitcher Recent workload September 23: 88 pitches, six innings. September 26: 21 pitches, one inning. Four intervening rest days before October 1. September 25: 54 pitches, four relief innings. Five intervening rest days. Season indicators 23.8% strikeouts, 7.9% walks; 37 homers allowed in 175⅓ innings. 17.9% strikeouts, 9.7% walks; 5.09 xERA despite 3.44 actual ERA. Interpretation Better strikeout-minus-walk profile, but substantial homer risk. The short finale does not establish a new pitch limit. Better actual run prevention, but weaker underlying indicators; an opener/bulk arrangement is plausible. Sources: Nola statistics and game log, Pitcher List, Holmes statistics, Pitcher List, and Holmes’s September 25 outing, RotoWire.
Confirmed context: Nola’s September 26 appearance was on short rest and ended after one inning. MLB, September 26
My interpretation: do not extrapolate that appearance into a normal-rest collapse, but do not erase it either. Neither pitcher’s verified information establishes today’s maximum pitches. I would model flexible postseason usage, not automatically project six innings apiece.
Bullpen availability and fatigue
The completed box scores provide this workload ledger:
Reliever September 29 pitches September 30 pitches Assessment for Game 3—not confirmation PHI Jhoan Duran 27 Did not pitch Likely more usable after a rest day; capacity unknown PHI Alex McFarlane 16 4 Modest pitch total, but third consecutive day possible PHI Andrew Painter Did not pitch 37 across three innings Meaningful fatigue concern; do not budget another long outing ATL Raisel Iglesias 7 9 Light total despite consecutive appearances ATL Dylan Lee 16 15 Greater third-day concern than Iglesias ATL Didier Fuentes 12 21 Consecutive-day workload merits a discount Sources: September 29 box score, StatMuse and September 30 box score, StatMuse.
These are confirmed usage totals, not medical availability declarations. My inference is that Atlanta retains a manageable late-inning path, while Philadelphia’s bridge to Duran is more uncertain after Painter’s workload. There is insufficient evidence to declare either bullpen exhausted.
Lineup, platoons, defense and running
No Game 3 batting order is confirmed. A probable framework, based on Game 2, keeps Turner–Schwarber–Harper–Bohm prominent for Philadelphia and Acuña–Baldwin–Albies–Olson prominent for Atlanta; exact slots and remaining starters are unknown. Game 2 batting order, StatMuse
Confirmed roster limitation: Arraez, Raley and Kilian were excluded from Philadelphia’s Wild Card roster. Unknown: Sosa’s Game 3 availability after leaving Game 2 with a leg issue. Arraez’s absence and a possible Sosa absence affect both offensive depth and defensive positioning; I cannot responsibly attach an exact run penalty without the replacements. Phillies Nation, September 29, AP/Sportsnet, September 30
Platoons: Holmes’s available 2026 split snapshot actually shows lower batting average allowed to lefties than righties; the 2025 split was nearly even. That argues against assigning Philadelphia a large automatic advantage simply for using left-handed hitters. The snapshots differ in completeness, so I do not present them as final-season splits. Verified current team platoon wRC+ and Nola’s corresponding split table remain unavailable. RotoWire Holmes splits
Defense: MLB’s September 29 comparison favors Atlanta’s center-field offense and defense. MLB positional comparison Harper’s Game 2 outfield misplay is an additional positioning concern, not proof of a team-wide defensive rating. AP/Sportsnet
Baserunning: Acuña stole two bases in Game 2. That supports a tactical running threat, but one game does not establish a quantified team advantage. I make no separate numerical baserunning adjustment. StatMuse
Park, weather and recent form
The available 2025–26 Statcast park-factor snapshot gives Truist an overall index of 101, runs 102, and homers 105, with 100 representing neutral. I treat the park as approximately neutral overall with a modest homer allowance—not a large Atlanta-specific advantage. Weather is unknown: no usable, cutoff-valid stadium forecast was verified. Baseball Savant park factors
Atlanta finished 94–68, Philadelphia 88–74; the series was tied after Philadelphia’s Game 2 win. Baseball-Reference series summary
Those records produce a simple neutral-field log5 baseline of approximately 53.8% Atlanta. This is my calculation, not a published forecast. A modest home adjustment pushes upward; regression of Holmes’s ERA and Nola’s stronger strikeout/walk profile pull downward. Lineup depth, defense and bullpen uncertainty keep my final estimate at 55%.
Opponent-adjusted recent form remains incomplete. I could not verify a consistent recent schedule-adjusted run-differential or offensive-quality dataset. Consequently, I give neither the two playoff results nor a short ERA streak an independent “momentum” premium. My reasonable sensitivity range is roughly 48–62% Atlanta, not a calibrated confidence interval.
Counterarguments and decision conditions
The strongest Philadelphia case is that Nola’s underlying command profile exceeds Holmes’s, Duran has had a day without pitching, and Atlanta’s frequently used relievers must cover a potentially short bulk outing. The strongest Atlanta case is its better season baseline, home field, defensive support, and Philadelphia’s uncertain pitching bridge.
NO BET now: the missing confirmed starter/bulk assignments, workload limits and high-leverage availability make this provisional estimate unsuitable for execution. Unknown lineups add uncertainty but are not, alone, my blocker. Contract settlement terms have not been audited.
Recalculate or abandon the thesis if a starter changes; Wheeler receives a substantial role; a key hitter is scratched; Duran or Iglesias is unavailable; weather interrupts the pitching plan; or live velocity, command and pitch usage materially contradict expected workload. An early run by itself is not thesis invalidation.
