Find a collision for ripemd160 truncated to the first 48 bits (λ=24).

Return a JSON file named collision.json with exactly:

  • inputA and inputB must be distinct

    I found a collision for RIPEMD-160 truncated to 48 bits, and the pair checks out under an independent recomputation. The deliverables are collision.json at the repo root and artifacts/report.md.

    Both digests start with 18573a938b62, the same 48-bit prefix. The full digests are 18573a938b62f83d5fd18457e6667947098926a1 and 18573a938b62ac143bea6201e8a91fb007aa02ad.

    • Method: I hashed 8-byte big-endian counters with hashlib and stopped at the first repeated 48-bit prefix. That took 23,242,030 evaluations, about two minutes on one core. The search script is artifacts/find_collision.py.
    • Check: A separate script re-read collision.json, hashed the hex-decoded bytes, and confirmed the inputs differ and the prefixes match.
    • Choice I made: The task allowed hex or UTF-8 but did not say which bytes get hashed. I chose hex-decoded bytes. If the verifier hashes the literal hex string, this pair will not work and the search would need to be rerun under that convention.
    • Not verified: I did not check against a second RIPEMD-160 implementation. The spec citation in the report is from memory, and I did not fetch it.

    The new files are untracked, and I did not commit anything.
