Your only job is to produce one trade decision for a user on PaperTrade, a perp exchange on HyperEVM that executes and liquidates at the Hyperliquid BTC mid price ((best bid + best ask) / 2). The goal is to make the user money on this trade and the highest gains you can.

Trade constraints (fixed, do not change them)

  • Instrument: BTC-USD perpetual.
  • Direction: you must choose exactly one of "long" or "short".
  • Leverage: you must choose an integer between 500 and 1000 inclusive.
  • The position is closed at take-profit or by liquidation. Ideally the trade plays out within 30 minutes or less.
  • There is no stop-loss other than liquidation. Treat liquidation as the stop.
  • Take profit is expressed as the move in the BTC PRICE in your favor, in basis points (1 bp = 0.01%), not the return on margin.
  • Don't just pick smallest leverage because it is safest. optimize for big gains as well.

PaperTrade execution mechanics (read carefully, they drive target sizing)

Entry and exit both fill at the Hyperliquid BBO mid. There is no spread, no slippage, no funding, and no fee on notional.

Liquidation ("bust"). The position is hard-liquidated when the mid crosses the bust price, and the full isolated margin is forfeited. The bust trigger is about 4.8 bp CLOSER to entry

than the zero-equity distance (10000 / leverage bp), so:

  bust distance (bp) ≈ 10000 / leverage − 4.8

  1000x →  5.2 bp

   900x →  6.3 bp

   800x →  7.7 bp

   700x →  9.5 bp

   600x → 11.9 bp

   500x → 15.2 bp

Asymmetric impact haircut on wins. Losses are never charged anything extra. Winning closes go through three steps: (1) a 0.2 bp deadband is subtracted from the move, (2) the raw gain

is multiplied by a scale factor that is small for tiny moves and approaches 0.90 for big moves, (3) a 2% win fee is taken. Formula with BTC's current parameters:

  scale = 0.90 / (1 + 1/(move × 15000) + 100000/(1e6 × move × 814.598))

  move  = |exit − entry| / entry, after the 0.2 bp deadband

The haircut depends only on move size, not position size. Net share of the raw gain the trader keeps, and the resulting return on margin:

  move keep return on margin @500x @1000x

   3 bp   49%        7%                   15%

   5 bp   61%       15%                   30%

   8 bp   69%       28%                   55%

  10 bp   72%       36%                   72%

  15 bp   77%       58%                  116%

  20 bp   80%       80%                  159%

  30 bp   82%      124%                  247%

  50 bp   85%      212%                  423%

Implication: very small take-profits are heavily taxed, so the target needs to be large enough to clear the haircut while still being reachable before an adverse move of the bust

distance becomes likely. Higher leverage multiplies gains but shrinks the survivable adverse move. Weigh these together.

How to decide

The decision is entirely yours. Pull the market data described below, and if you can look up anything else that helps (current news, scheduled macro events, liquidation heatmaps, other

exchanges' order flow, anything you consider useful), do so and factor it in. Be decisive: you must return a direction. Express doubt through the confidence field and through your

choice of leverage and target, not by refusing.

Fetching the market data

Hyperliquid has a free public API with no authentication. Every request is an HTTP POST to:

  https://api.hyperliquid.xyz/info

with header Content-Type: application/json and a JSON body. Timestamps are Unix milliseconds. Fetch at least the following. Use the current time for endTime and work backwards for

startTime.

  1. Candles (fetch all three intervals): {"type":"candleSnapshot","req":{"coin":"BTC","interval":"1m","startTime":<now - 60 min>,"endTime":}}

    {"type":"candleSnapshot","req":{"coin":"BTC","interval":"5m","startTime":<now - 6 h>,"endTime":}}

    {"type":"candleSnapshot","req":{"coin":"BTC","interval":"15m","startTime":<now - 24 h>,"endTime":}}

    Response is an array of candle objects: t = open time ms, T = close time ms, o/h/l/c = open/high/low/close as strings, v = volume in BTC, n = number of trades. Oldest first.

  2. Current market context: {"type":"metaAndAssetCtxs"}

    Response is [meta, ctxs]. Find the index of the entry with name "BTC" in meta.universe, then read ctxs[thatIndex]. Useful fields: markPx, oraclePx, premium, funding (hourly rate,

positive means longs pay shorts), openInterest (in BTC), dayNtlVlm (24h notional volume USD), prevDayPx.

  1. Order book: {"type":"l2Book","coin":"BTC","nSigFigs":5}

    Response has levels[0] = bids and levels[1] = asks, each an array of {px, sz, n}, best price first. Best bid is levels[0][0].px, best ask is levels[1][0].px. mid = (best bid + best

ask) / 2. This mid is exactly the price PaperTrade will fill and liquidate at.

Other useful queries if you want them: {"type":"fundingHistory","coin":"BTC","startTime":} for recent funding, {"type":"recentTrades","coin":"BTC"} for the latest prints. Rate

limit is generous (1200 weight per minute); these calls are weight 2 to 20 each.

Metrics

Look up any additional data and calculate any metric that could help your decision. Work in basis points of price so results compare directly with the bust distance and

take-profit. Some that are likely useful:

  • How often recent 1m windows moved against a position by more than the bust distance before moving the take-profit distance in its favor
  • Per-candle adverse excursion (high − open, open − low) on 1m and 5m vs. the bust distance
  • Realized volatility per minute over the last 15/30/60 minutes and whether it is expanding or contracting
  • Distance from session VWAP and from 1m/5m EMAs
  • Rate of change and EMA slope on 1m and 5m; agreement across 1m/5m/15m
  • Cumulative volume delta and average trade size from recentTrades
  • Book imbalance within 10 bp of mid; resting liquidity between entry and take-profit or bust
  • markPx vs. oraclePx premium and current funding
  • Open interest change vs. price change
  • Position within the 24h range; distance to prior-day high/low/close and recent swing points
  • Time of day (US open, funding settlement) and scheduled macro releases in the next hour

Output

Return ONLY a single JSON object, no markdown fences, no commentary before or after. Use exactly these keys and types:

The latest 1m candle swept to 81685 and closed back at 81758, and the perp trades about 3.2 bp below the oracle, which leans toward a mean-reversion bounce. In a 60-minute 1m first-touch backtest, longs beat shorts at every leverage and target tested. Realized volatility is about 3.7 bp per minute (roughly 20 bp per 30 min), so any bust distance under 10 bp tends to get hit by noise. That is why I chose the minimum 500x (15.2 bp bust, below the 22:03 sweep low). The 12 bp target keeps about 75% of the raw gain after the haircut and sits just under the 81850-81940 congestion.","risks":"The most likely way this gets liquidated is the 24h downtrend resuming. A break of the 81685 sweep low and the 81619 1h low would run through the 81633 bust, helped by heavier asks within 10 bp of mid (110 BTC of asks vs 47 BTC of bids). On this data the expected value is negative under conservative assumptions; see the Uncertainty section."}

Backtest (computed from the last 61 one-minute candles)

From every 1m open I walked forward up to 30 candles and recorded whether the take-profit or the bust level was touched first. When both were touched inside the same candle I counted it as a loss, which is conservative. EV is p·return − (1−p)·100%, using only paths that reached one level or the other.

LevBust bpTP bpDirwin/loss/openp(win)Return if TP hitsEV % of margin
50015.212long29/18/130.6244.8%−10.6
55013.412long29/19/120.6049.3%−9.8
60011.912long28/21/110.5753.8%−12.1
7009.512long27/25/80.5262.8%−15.5
50015.212short25/24/110.5144.8%−26.1
60011.912short21/28/110.4353.8%−34.1

The full grid covers leverage 500–1000, TP 5–30 bp and both directions; it is regenerated by the script into metrics.json. Longs scored better than shorts in every cell. Leverage above 700x lowered EV further, because the bust distance (≤ 7.7 bp) is about two minutes of typical noise.

Haircut check

The brief's formula with move = 11.8 bp (12 bp minus the 0.2 bp deadband) gives scale × 0.98 = 74.7% of the raw 12 bp. That works out to 44.84% return on margin at 500x, consistent with the brief's table (≈72% at 10 bp, 77% at 15 bp).

Inferences (my judgment, not measured)

  • Direction (long): I read the setup as a range with a fresh sweep and reclaim of 81685, made inside a 6h range whose floor (81497) has held. The perp is at a discount to the oracle, which tends to close by the perp rising, and longs beat shorts in the backtest. Against this, the 24h trend, all EMA slopes and the ask-heavy book point down. I weighed this as only a mild long edge.
  • Leverage (500x): with about 20 bp of 30-minute sigma, the survival odds drop quickly as the bust distance falls below 10 bp. The extra return from higher leverage (62.8% at 700x vs 44.8% at 500x) did not make up for the higher bust rate in the backtest.
  • Target (12 bp): the backtest's EV peaked around 10–15 bp. 12 bp keeps about 75% of the gain after the haircut and sits below the 81850–81944 supply zone left by the 21:35–21:45 5m candles.
  • Regime "ranging": 1h ROC is ≈0 and realized volatility is flat, but the 24h trend is down. "Ranging" is the closest label.

Uncertainty and limits

  • Expected value is negative on this sample. Every leverage/TP/direction cell in the 60-minute backtest has negative EV, because the 500x breakeven win rate at a 12 bp TP is about 69% and the measured rate was 62%. The brief requires a direction, so this is a forced best-of-available choice, not a positive-edge trade. Confidence of 0.4 reflects that.
  • The backtest uses only 60 overlapping, autocorrelated windows from a single hour, so its statistical power is weak. A 1m candle cannot show the order in which high and low printed, hence the conservative tie rule.
  • recentTrades returned only 10 prints covering 3.6 seconds, so CVD and average trade size are not meaningful and were not used.
  • Not checked: news, the scheduled macro calendar, liquidation heatmaps, and other venues' order flow. I made no web lookups for these. 22:04 UTC is after US cash-market hours, which I infer is a lower-catalyst window, but I did not verify that against a calendar.
  • Open-interest change could not be computed because only a single OI snapshot was taken.
  • Price drift: the decision is based on the 22:04:07Z mid. If entry happens later at a different mid, TP and bust shift with it.

Unanswered questions

  • Will the 81685/81619 lows hold if the 24h downtrend resumes? This decides between take-profit and bust.
  • Was there any news or liquidation cluster behind the −210 bp daily move? I did not research this.

    I've decided on a long at 500x with a 12 bp take-profit, but on the data I measured every option has negative expected value. The brief requires a direction, so this is the best of the available choices, not a trade with a measured edge. Confidence is 0.4.

    Return on margin if take-profit hits44.84% after the haircut and win fee
    Regimeranging
    Support / resistance81619 / 81944

    Why long:

    • BTC is down about 210 bp on the day and sits near the bottom of its 24h range, but over the last 6h it has drifted slightly up within a range.
    • The latest 1-minute candle dipped to 81685 and closed back at 81758.
    • The perp trades about 3.2 bp below the oracle price, which tends to close by the perp rising.
    • In a backtest over the last hour of 1-minute candles, longs beat shorts at every leverage and target I tried.

    Why 500x and 12 bp:

    • Price moves about 3.7 bp per minute, or roughly 20 bp over 30 minutes. Liquidation distances of 7.7 bp or less (800x and up) get hit by ordinary noise.
    • In the backtest, expected value was least bad at leverage of 600x or lower with targets of 10–15 bp. 12 bp keeps about 75% of the gain after the haircut and sits just below the 81850–81944 resistance.

    Why the expected value is negative: at 500x with a 12 bp target, the trade needs about a 69% win rate to break even, and the backtest measured 62%. That sample is only 60 overlapping one-minute windows from a single hour, so it is weak evidence either way. When take-profit and liquidation were both touched within one candle I counted a loss, which is conservative.

    What I did not check:

    • No news, macro calendar, liquidation heatmaps or other exchanges' order flow.
    • I left out trade-flow metrics because the recent-trades feed returned only 10 trades covering 3.6 seconds.
    • I took a single open-interest reading, so there is no open-interest change.

    Files:

    • artifacts/report.md: the decision JSON, plus a cited evidence table and backtest. It keeps measured facts, my inferences and open questions in separate sections. It is left untracked so the daemon can upload it.
    • scripts/analyze.mjs: fetches all the market data and recomputes every metric and the backtest. Run it with node scripts/analyze.mjs <outDir>.
    • README.md: states the question and the limits.

    I checked that the decision JSON parses with jq, and recomputed the take-profit price, bust price and haircut with a script. README.md and scripts/analyze.mjs are staged but not committed, because git has no author identity set here. I chose not to set one from this machine's details.
