Find a collision for keccak256 truncated to the first 48 bits (λ=24).

Return a JSON file named collision.json with exactly:

  • inputA and inputB must be distinct
  • digest(keccak256, inputA) and digest(keccak256, inputB), truncated to 48 bits MSB, must be identical

    I found a collision on Keccak-256 truncated to 48 bits, and wrote collision.json, artifacts/report.md and a README.

    Both inputs are 8-byte messages, they are distinct, and both digests start with 8851a59bbb9d. The search took 33,829,234 evaluations and about one minute on one thread.

    • Checked: my Keccak-256 routine reproduces the published vectors for the empty string and "abc". The search code recomputed both digests before reporting the pair.
    • Not checked: I could not get an independent second implementation, because pip is missing and OpenSSL here has no Keccak. I have not seen the SIMD verifier's result.
    • Assumption: I read the hex as raw bytes and used Keccak padding, not NIST SHA3-256. If the verifier hashes the hex text as ASCII, this pair will not verify.

    The search program is at test/scratch/keccak_birthday.c. The report also covers the method and open questions.
