Take this network to 1st on Paradigm's AMM fee challenge (https://www.paradigm.xyz/puzzles/amm). A Solidity contract Strategy is AMMStrategyBase returns a bid and an ask fee at start and after every trade on its constant-product AMM. It competes for retail flow against a fixed 30 bps normalizer AMM while arbitrageurs trade both. Score: average edge over 1000 simulations with randomized parameters. Rules, math and simulator: https://github.com/benedictbrady/amm-challenge at commit 6b6921f8d463314aa7c96234e1be25a25245f704 (Rust engine built with maturin, py-solc-x, pyrevm; amm-match run strategy.sol --simulations N, amm-match validate).

Board on 2026-11-07: 1st @0xMai 528.40, 2nd @Ponxter 528.32, 3rd 528.26, 4th 528.21, 5th 528.10, 75 pages of entries. The top five sit within 0.3 of each other, so the gains left are small and only paired measurement will see them. Public write-ups of this challenge may exist; read and cite them if you find them.

How to run the rounds:

  • Round 1 builds strong starting points from first principles, not small tweaks: fees from an inferred fair price (an arbitrage trade shows the price moved past the fee band), asymmetric bid and ask, inventory, volatility from trade timing and size, telling retail from arbitrage. Each item returns a complete .sol.
  • Measure every candidate paired against the current best on the same simulation seeds (seed the Rust runner if the CLI cannot), at least 2,000 simulations per comparison, reporting n, mean difference, its standard error and the 5 worst runs. One 1000-simulation score moves by more than the top-five gap.
  • Keep a scoreboard in your notes: the best file's SHA-256 and score, and every candidate's paired difference against it.
  • Promote only when a paired gain clears twice its standard error on fresh seeds that no tuning used.
  • Later rounds: about 40% deepen the best, 30% fresh mechanisms, 15% simplify, 15% measure and replicate. No two items in a round try the same idea.
  • Code must pass amm-match validate, use only the 32 slots, and stay gas-light (no loops over history).
  • Each item returns JSON: approach, tried, next, code (the full .sol), code_sha256, score {n, mean_edge}, paired {n, mean_diff, se, worst}, seconds_per_simulation.
  • Stop after two rounds in a row with no promotion, or at the last episode.

Write-up: the best Strategy.sol, ready to submit, its SHA-256, its paired gain over the starter and over the previous best with standard errors, and a ranked table of every promotion.

  1. Round 1

Agent #1299 planned it. Started 12 min after the job was posted.

    1 step
    1. Orchestrate 001Agent #1299made 1 file

The episode-1 decisions file is written and checked.

      What I did

      • Read the goal, the orchestrator skill and its reference. Nothing had run yet, so this episode's job was to set up round 1.
      • Pulled the simulator source at the pinned commit and read the engine, router, arbitrageur, config, validator, compiler and base contract, so the briefs state verified facts rather than guesses.
      • Searched for public write-ups. No Paradigm write-up exists. Two solution repos (jiayaoqijia and dipankar forks) are recorded in the notes as data to cite and as the target of one replication item.

Key findings that shaped the plan

      • The Python runner uses seed i for simulation i, so any two runs over the same seed range are paired already. Per-seed edges need a short script around the Rust batch call, which the brief specifies.
      • Each arbitrage trade reveals the fair price exactly from the post-trade spot and the quoted fee, and a gap between calls proves no arb hit the pool in between. These are the first-principles seeds for the fair-price, state-machine and interval items.
      • A brief is capped at 3,000 characters once filled, so the best Strategy.sol can never travel inside one. Round 1 is therefore a code wave that also lays out the goal's trunk (simulator sources, a paired-measurement CLI, the starter as the initial best, a scoreboard).
      • Server parameters on Paradigm's page match the pinned config. A public claim that a fixed 30 bps entry scores about 522 on the board is unverified and flagged. The reference item measures the local vanilla score so the gap can be judged.

      Decisions written to artifacts/goal/episodes/001/decisions.json

      • One code batch r1 with 13 items, disjoint scopes, each one idea: trunk layout, fixed-fee grid, tuned README example, fair-centered quotes, band-state machine, fair-price interval tracker, router-optimal fee, volatility estimate, flow estimate, inventory skew, size toxicity, within-simulation bandit, and a public-solution replica.
      • Every item pairs against the 50 bps starter on fresh seeds 100000 to 101999 with n of at least 2,000, tunes only on seeds 0 to 99999, and returns the JSON the objective requires.
      • Seed policy for later episodes: confirmation block e×100000 for episode e, promotion only when the paired gain clears twice its standard error.
      • All 13 results are requested for the next episode. Wake when r1 settles or after 240 minutes. Finish is false.

      Checks

      • All 13 filled briefs are between 2,755 and 2,998 characters. Notes are 6,642 characters. The file parses as one JSON object with the reference's fields.
      • Git status shows only the sandbox's phantom dotfiles. The decisions file is left untracked for the daemon to upload.

The report is written to artifacts/goal/writeup/report.md (39,526 bytes, under the 120,000 cap). It is excluded from Git by the worker's own rule, as named outputs should be, and nothing else in the workspace changed apart from my scratch files under test/scratch/.

    What the report says

    • Best file: NP, the public ChengHua926 strategy (commit d34a5199) plus a nine-line normalizer-spot observation written by this network. The full source is embedded verbatim. I recomputed its SHA-256 from the embedded block and it matches the result's hash, f1ea5b95c853ef28399a0b22ec222773525dba18c92282c04993170c97b57c83.
    • Gains: NP beats the previous best (CH) by +0.4645 (se 0.0159, n 2000, fresh block 600000..601999, worst seed −4.58). Against the 50 bps starter it is +156.26 on the same block, derived from two same-seed measurements (se bounded 0.89–0.93), and +156.12 (se 0.947) by chaining the three promotions. Score on seeds 0..999 is 526.03.
    • Ranked promotions: YQ over starter +154.69 (se 0.95), CH over YQ +0.962 (se 0.021), NP over CH +0.4645 (se 0.016). All on fresh seeds no tuning used.
    • Not reached: the board map puts NP near 10th, about 3.5 local edge short of 1st. The requester's submit thresholds and calibration marks were not met.
    • Gaps stated plainly: round 4's 31 items and the priority combination NP2 produced no measurement because the setup script lacked tar --no-same-owner; calibration of CH and NP never landed; the trunk at commit 5527a7f0 does not hold NP because the r4-trunk wave never merged.
    • Also included: the full candidate scoreboard (CH deltas, 13 public files, YQ deltas, round-1 standalones), methods, the setup-script deviation, a prioritized plan for the next run, and citations for every public repo and write-up read.

  12. JudgeAgent #6found 1 low, 1 info

The review is complete and the scratch toolchain is removed. Only the findings file was added to the repository.

Outcome: the deliverable holds up. I rebuilt the pinned simulator (Rust engine via maturin, solc 0.8.24, pyrevm) and reproduced every headline figure to the last digit on the same seeds. I found no high or medium defects. The findings file holds one low and one informational item.

What I verified against the report's own data and sources

    • The Solidity block in section 1 hashes to the stated SHA-256, is 9,870 bytes, and differs from ChengHua926's file at commit d34a5199 only by the eight inserted lines. The CH, YQ and starter hashes all match the raw files.
    • amm-match validate passes at the pinned commit. The strategy uses slots 0 to 10 and its only loop is bounded by the elapsed cap of 8.
    • The inserted normalizer-spot formula matches the router source: isBuy means the AMM buys X, fees are on input, and the arbitrageur always trades before retail within a step, so the "not first in step" reasoning is sound.
    • Scores on seeds 0..999 reproduced exactly: NP 526.0337302497852, CH 525.5258821780834, YQ 524.6271111458843.
    • Paired NP versus CH on seeds 600000..601999 reproduced exactly: n 2000, mean +0.4645, se 0.0159, ratio 29.3, and the same five worst seeds with the same values.
    • CH versus starter on the same block gave +155.80 (se 0.909) and NP versus starter gave +156.26 (se 0.909), matching the measured row and the derived row, with the se inside the stated bounds.
    • Leaderboard API: 743 entries, 1st 528.399, 10th 524.658, and all three fixed-fee anchors at the stated board scores. Upstream main still equals the pinned commit.
    • The Algebra Finance write-up, the HackMD note and the YQ README say what the report attributes to them.

    Findings written

    1. Low. Section 4 states the first-place gap as "529.5–530 local, +3.5", but the report's own board-to-local mapping of −0.7 to −3.7 gives a local target of 529.1 to 532.1, so the gap is +3.1 to +6.1. The anchors are 1000-simulation means with se near 2.8, so the mapping is coarser than the text implies. The conclusion that 1st place was not reached is unaffected.
    2. Info. Section 7 discloses that the trunk's best file is still the starter. NP exists only in the report and a result's code field. The report is explicit, and the embedded source is correct and usable.

The report answers every part of the goal's write-up requirement: the ready-to-submit file, its hash, paired gains over the starter and the previous best with standard errors, and the ranked promotion table. It also names what is missing, including the unmeasured round 4 and the NP plus two-print combination.

    • lowSection 4: the stated first-place gap (529.5-530 local, +3.5) is narrower than the report's own board-to-local mapping implies

      Section 4 derives 'board ~ local(0..999) - 0.7 to -3.7' from four anchors (30 bps: 338.60 vs 342.26 = -3.66; starter: 367.18 vs 367.92 = -0.74; 75 bps: 378.94 vs 380.1 = -1.16; YQ: 523.21 vs 524.63 = -1.42). I confirmed the three board anchors from the leaderboard API (338.6019, 367.1778, 378.9432) and the 1st place of 528.399. Applying the report's own range to 528.40 gives a local target of 529.1 to 532.1, i.e. +3.1 to +6.1 over NP's 526.03.

The report instead states 'about 529.5-530 local, +3.5 over NP', and the one-line outcome and section 8 repeat '+3.5'. The range 529.5-530 does not follow from the stated mapping, and the gap could be almost twice the headline figure. Each anchor is also a 1000-simulation mean on both sides (the report gives se 2.79 for 1000-seed local means), so the -0.7 to -3.7 spread is within one standard error and the mapping is coarser than the two-decimal targets suggest.

This does not change the conclusion that 1st place was not reached.

Take the mapping range stated in section 4 (board = local - 0.7 ... local - 3.7) and the board 1st place 528.40 (section 4; leaderboard API rank 1 avgEdge 528.3992637).

      Expected local target: 528.40 + 0.7 = 529.1 to 528.40 + 3.7 = 532.1; gap over NP 526.03: +3.1 to +6.1.

Actual text: 'about 529.5-530 local, +3.5 over NP'.

    • infoSection 7: the goal's repository trunk does not contain the best file; NP exists only inside the report and a result's code field

Section 7 states that the trunk's best/Strategy.sol is still the starter because the wave meant to write NP into best/Strategy.sol and best/SCOREBOARD.md never merged.

The report discloses this and supplies the full source plus its SHA-256, which I verified: the code block in section 1 (lines 19-228 of the report, with trailing newline) hashes to f1ea5b95c853ef28399a0b22ec222773525dba18c92282c04993170c97b57c83, is 9,870 bytes, differs from ChengHua926 d34a5199 Strategy.sol (SHA-256 6dd68f77... confirmed from the raw URL) only by the eight inserted lines, passes amm-match validate at the pinned commit, and scores exactly 526.0337302497852 on seeds 0..999 in my own build of the pinned simulator.

So the deliverable is usable, but a requester who checks out the trunk will not find NP there and must extract it from the report. Recorded for completeness, not as a defect of the report's claims.

Clone the trunk named in section 7 at commit 5527a7f0 and open best/Strategy.sol: per the report it is the 50 bps starter (SHA-256 8f2cea33...), not NP (f1ea5b95...). Extract lines 19-228 of the report into Strategy.sol and run sha256sum: f1ea5b95c853ef28399a0b22ec222773525dba18c92282c04993170c97b57c83.
